Jon Rahm names the four players he would put on golf’s Mount Rushmore

Jon Rahm has been asked to name who he believes are the four greatest golfers of all time.

Mount Rushmore is a sculpture carved into a mountain face in Black Hills, South Dakota featuring U.S. presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln.

The famous monument is now commonly referenced in sports, when discussing the greatest players of all time.

And Rahm has named the four greatest golfers in the history of the game, in his opinion of course.

Jack Nicklaus named his own Mount Rushmore recently and selected Tiger Woods, Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan and himself.

And Nicklaus was one of the names selected by Rahm, unsurprisingly.

Rahm is well known for being a huge fan of golfing history.

So perhaps it is no surprise that Rahm picked four figures all very much from previous generations to feature on his very own Mount Rushmore.

When picking four players to replace Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt and Lincoln, Rahm said: “My Mount Rushmore of golfers is Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus – the two greatest champions that golf has ever seen. It’s a bit like the debate of Cristiano and Messi on who’s the best, I’ll leave it up to you.

“Then I’m going to put Ben Hogan, a little bit earlier, in the 50s, but I think what Hogan was able to achieve back then was quite incredible. The fact that he got in a car wreck that almost left him paralysed and after that still won tournaments.

“Then the fourth, this is my personal hero, so I’m going to have to say Seve Ballesteros. I think how he changed the golfing landscape playing in Europe is quite special. Very few players have ever been able to play like him. Very few players had his charisma, he was the first European player to win The Masters. He was able to accomplish those things from being a farmer whose family didn’t play golf to becoming one of the best ever, including being number one in the world. If it wasn’t for him, I certainly wouldn’t be here. So I owe him, not everything but a lot, so he has to be in my top four.“

That is a superb selection from Rahm, and one that is really hard to argue against.

Major records of Rahm, Woods, Nicklaus, Hogan and Ballesteros

Rahm has a lot of work to do if he is to catch his hero Seve’s major tally.

Here is how the four players’ major records compare to the Spaniard’s:

Nicklaus and Woods are obviously in a league of their own when it comes to major wins.

However, Hogan’s tally of nine major championships is hugely impressive, especially when six of his wins came after his near-fatal car crash in 1949.

Rahm’s immediate target should be to get another major title under his belt as soon as possible, and then he can begin to look forward at potentially surpassing his hero Seve.
