Tony Finau has been in fairly poor form recently, and as a result, he’s not that fancied heading into the US Open.
Oakmont is the venue for the 125th US Open this week, and Finau will tee it up on Thursday with ambitions of winning his first major championship.
The 35-year-old from Utah certainly has the length needed to contend at Oakmont, but does he have the accuracy off the tee and the touch required with his putter?
At the moment, the answer to both of those questions is no.
Finau even resorted to putting one-handed at the Memorial two weeks ago, in an effort to solve his problems on the greens.

Given those issues, the last place Finau will feel comfortable playing right now is Oakmont.
Johnson Wagner warns players are being tricked by Oakmont after what Tony Finau did
The six-time PGA Tour winner has been out on the grounds at Oakmont working hard ahead of the US Open.
And he quickly found out that the Henry Fownes design is littered with nightmare fuel in every single nook and cranny of the unforgiving layout.
Johnson Wagner was out on the course on Monday, and noticed Finau having some problems in a fairway bunker on the seventh hole.
Wagner said, “I think some of my favourite features at Oakmont are the fairways bunkers. There are six of them here [on the seventh hole] and they have these flat sand bottoms and really steep faces. So the ball comes in and it tricks you into thinking you can get more than you can. 160 or 165 yards from the green and I have a lie that maybe I could push a wedge out of.

“I have just seen Tony Finau in the bunker behind me hit three different shots with the seven iron, drilled the lip every single time and he looked down and was like I guess it was eight or a nine iron not a seven iron.
“So around here at Oakmont I don’t know what you would prefer, bunkers or the rough. They are both equally penalising. And it’s why I think total driving is the most important stat you can look at when trying to predict who is going to win here at Oakmont.“
Tony Finau’s 2025 stats on the PGA Tour
Finau has been nowhere near his best this season.
He only has one top-10 in 14 starts so far in 2025.
Here is how he ranks in the four key statistical categories on the PGA Tour this season.
| Statistical category | Finau’s 2025 rank |
| Strokes gained off the tee | 63rd |
| Strokes gained approach | 87th |
| Strokes gained putting | 101st |
| Strokes gained total | 55th |
Putting has clearly been his main weakness this season, but he will need to improve all aspects of his game if he is to challenge at Oakmont this week.
The signs are telling us that Finau will not contend at the US Open.
