Few would have ever imagined that Scottie Scheffler would go into The CJ Cup Byron Nelson still awaiting his first win of the PGA Tour season after a historic year in which he won nine times worldwide.

Scottie Scheffler had blown the rest of the PGA Tour away in 2024. Scheffler won The Masters, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, The Players Championship, Memorial, the Olympics and the Tour Championship.

The big question was whether he could sustain anything like that dominance over a much longer period. One of the reasons Tiger Woods put himself alongside Jack Nicklaus was the fact that he enjoyed several years comparable with Scheffler’s 2024.

Scheffler has not finished outside the top 25 so far this season. However, the world number one has also not won a single event since the turn of the year.

Johnson Wagner makes a prediction about Scottie Scheffler after The Masters

It is odd to see. Scheffler has played extremely well in recent months, particularly after sustaining a hand injury at Christmas. And yet, getting across that line is proving much more challenging than many would have expected.

But perhaps his fourth place finish at The Masters this year may help Scheffler end that wait for a win. Speaking on 5 Clubs, Johnson Wagner believes that a victory is just around the corner, particularly after his display at Augusta National.

“We were talking about this last night, the schedule that these guys have coming up, they want to support The Byron Nelson, they want to support Colonial. It’s tough because you have the Truist and then PGA Championship, and then on the backside of Colonial, you have Memorial where Scottie’s going to be defending. So it’s tough for those Texas guys to pick and choose their schedule. But I absolutely expect him to win [in the next month]. Scottie Scheffler is somehow third in the FedEx Cup right now. Everyone’s talking about he’s not playing great and he hasn’t won,” he said.

“I think this is a good thing for Scottie right now because I certainly see him winning a major this year. And I think not picking off The Masters gives him that extra level of hunger and desire to go; Oakmont, Scottie Scheffler at Oakmont seems a pretty good fit to me.”

The point Scottie Scheffler still has to prove after his two major wins

Scheffler is in that group of players in the current game on two major titles. However, unlike Xander Schauffele or Collin Morikawa, Scheffler’s wins have come at the same major.

He does now need to show that he can win another major elsewhere. The good news is that his record across the PGA Championship, the US Open and The Open Championship is still very impressive.

He has nine top 10s already, having finished second at both the PGA and the US Open previously.

With that, while Phil Mickelson does not expect Scheffler to win before the Ryder Cup, it would be incredibly dangerous to write him off over the next few months. .
