Jason Day has shared his surprise at one shot Brian Harman hit during the first round of the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow.
The Aussie carded an impressive three-under-par round to sit four shots adrift of Xander Schauffele, who leads after carding a seven-under 64.
Schauffele’s round wasn’t without drama after taking a controversial drop on his penultimate hole, which left fans fuming on social media.
The American won’t be overly bothered, however, as he continues his excellent form ahead of the PGA Championship at Valhalla next week, where he is now one of the favourites.
Jason Day reveals Brian Harman surprise at the Wells Fargo Championship

Speaking to the media after his round, Day was quick to highlight the difficulty of landing the ball on the greens at Quail Hollow.
Despite rain falling in Charlotte, the ball has been bouncing more than usual, something Max Homa also highlighted after his practice round.
Day shared his surprise at one shot Harman hit into the 10th hole at Quail Hollow. “I mean, it was interesting,” he said [via Ten Golf]. “I watched Brian Harman into the tenth green, which was our first hole today. He hit a wedge shot that must have skipped 15 paces. Granted, some of the greens were slightly inconsistent. Brian hit a great shot going into that green. It landed at the top of that hill and just trickled over.”
The Aussie also highlighted just how tough Quail Hollow is playing and that he doesn’t expect a low score to take the title on Sunday.
He added: “Once again, it’s just a really difficult golf course; it’s tough, and it’s long, especially with that northwesterly. It will be interesting to see where the scores end up. Typically, if you don’t see anything kind of lower than seven in the first round, sometimes it goes low teens. In the past, the winning score has been 16 under. I think it’s going to be a little harder than that.”
PGA Tour stars must fancy their chances at Valhalla next week
Ahead of the PGA Championship at Valhalla next week, much of the talk has focussed on whether the LIV Golf contingent can threaten Scottie Scheffler, who will more than likely compete at the top of the leaderboard.
But, considering the breakaway league isn’t in action till next month, those at the Wells Fargo will indeed have an advantage heading into the second major of the year.
Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa and Justin Thomas are all near the top of the leaderboard after the first round, which can only be a good sign.
LIV stars such as Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, and Jon Rahm will have to prepare away from a competitive environment, which could give the PGA Tour guys an edge.
