Jack Nicklaus is set to welcome the world’s best players to Muirfield Village for the Memorial Tournament this week.

Scottie Scheffler is the favourite to win the Memorial this week, and he will be desperate to defend his title.

Nicklaus is well-known to be a huge fan of Scheffler, and has praised the 28-year-old American’s stoicism on numerous occasions in the past.

A few months ago, Jack Nicklaus lauded Scheffler for ‘taking responsibility for his own game’ more than any other player does.

Scheffler broke Nicklaus’s record last year when he became the quickest player to go from one to 13 PGA Tour wins.

The three-time major champion is the best golfer in the world right now, and he has won two tournaments in the last three weeks.

It would surprise nobody if Scheffler turned up at Muirfield Village this week and won again.

Mr Nicklaus is certainly a huge fan of ‘the star of the PGA Tour’.

The grind never stops for Scheffler.

After his tie for fourth place last week at The Charles Schwab Challenge, the PGA champion flew from Dallas Fort Worth to Dublin, Ohio, for the Memorial Tournament.

The thing with Scheffler is that he seems to take all of the travel and media commitments into his stride.

Nicklaus spoke to the press on Tuesday afternoon and shared what the 15-time PGA Tour winner told him in the locker room just before he went out to face the media.

He said, “The way these guys are playing…

“I mean Scottie, Scottie is your defending champion. I mean, he’s been fantastic. He’s been the star of the tour. And, you know, I just talked to him in the locker room here just a minute ago, and he said, you know, he’s delighted to be back to be here to compete.”

Can Scheffler match Nicklaus’s record?

The 28-year-old needs to win 15 more major championships to tie Nicklaus’s record.

And he needs to bag another 58 PGA Tour wins to be level with the Golden Bear.

With Scheffler though, it’s not impossible that he will match those numbers, as challenging as it may be.

He would need to win 4 PGA Tour events on average for the next 15 years to pass Nicklaus’s record.

He would have to win one major per year on average during that period as well to tie the greatest of all time’s record haul of 18.

A good place to start for Scheffler would be a win at the Memorial Tournament this week, and there would be nobody happier to see him do that than Nicklaus.
