It’s been a fantastic season on the PGA Tour for J.J. Spaun, and after an impressive showing at The Open Championship he’s now thinking about Ryder Cup glory already.
In many ways, J.J. Spaun has emerged from relative obscurity to become one of the major players on the PGA Tour in 2025, with his US Open win making him a household name.
He’s now followed that up with a fairly decent showing at The Open Championship, with an overall score of six under par after 72 holes. Spaun wrapped things up with a final round of -3 on Sunday at Royal Portrush, to land in among the top 25.
While there’s still plenty of time for other golfers on the Tour to stake their own claim for a Ryder Cup spot, Spaun is now very likely to be part of Team USA for the first time, and he can’t wait.

J.J. Spaun plays up Xander Schauffele connection ahead of Ryder Cup
As things stand, Spaun is third in the USA rankings, behind the indomitable Scottie Scheffler who has already qualified for the team, and Xander Schauffele.
It’s the latter whom Spaun would love to be partnered with when the Ryder Cup rolls around later this year, as he explained post-round at Royal Portrush on Sunday afternoon.
Spaun said: “I would love that. Me and Xander go back a long way. He’s an extremely great player, and it would be awesome to have him as my partner.
“I think we have a connection other than just golf-related terms. We went to the same school. We played a lot of golf growing up. We get along well off the course as well. I think it would be a good match if we get paired together.”
| Rank | Player | Points |
| 1 | Scottie Scheffler (Q) | 27770.33 |
| 2 | Xander Schauffele | 12706.10 |
| 3 | J.J. Spaun | 12271.85 |
| 4 | Russell Henley | 11166.85 |
| 5 | Bryson DeChambeau | 10318.00 |
| 6 | Justin Thomas | 10078.31 |
The final decision on that matter will be down to Team USA captain Keegan Bradley, but given Spaun and Schauffele’s natural chemistry, we’re very likely to see the pair strutting their stuff together at Bethpage Black.

First experience of The Open is a big success for J.J. Spaun
Incredibly, this was Spaun’s first time playing at The Open Championship. While it wasn’t easy, with a particularly tough first round, the experience has clearly been a positive one.
After completing his final round, Spaun said: “I think I got a taste of it all; the venue, the crowds, the culture, the weather, playing with Xander and Jon the first couple days, feeling that atmosphere was really fun. I grade it an A+ for my first Open.”
Given Spaun has now jumped to number eight in the world rankings, we expect to see him at The Open for many years to come.
And, with the momentum he’s found this season, we wouldn’t be surprised to see him pull another big result out of the bag before the end of the Tour.
