J.J. Spaun clinched his first major championship win at this year’s US Open, with many players now looking to follow suit at The Open Championship.
But this year’s other major championship winners know that feeling, as Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler added to their respective tallies.
Scheffler has been tipped to win The Open Championship, which would represent a fourth major championship win for the world number one.
McIlroy meanwhile is seeking a sixth major championship win on home soil, having already completed the career grand slam.
Despite the major winning tallies being in favour of the Northern Irishman, Brandel Chamblee thinks Scheffler is better than McIlroy.

Xander Schauffele and Adam Scott agree over the best player not to win a major
They are among the favourites to clinch this year’s Claret Jug, but another first-time major winner could cause a real upset at The Open Championship.
And that topic has been discussed by a handful of PGA Tour stars ahead of The Open, with the likes of Adam Scott and Xander Schauffele having been asked who they think is the best current player without a major.
Scott told the PGA Tour on X: “Best current player without a major, probably Patrick Cantlay. He’s been a consistent performer for a lot of years.”
And Schauffele, who is out to defend his title at The Open, concurred: “I’ll go with my boy PC [Patrick Cantlay].”
Viktor Hovland meanwhile replied to the question: “I’d like to put myself in that box,” while Collin Morikawa responded: “I’m going to say Viktor Hovland. I root for him, we’ve been friends for a long time.”
And Sepp Straka said: “Tommy [Fleetwood], I don’t know, he’s got to be up there,” while a nervous Justin Thomas noted: “I’m not answering that. That’s a trap. I’m not answering it.”
What is Patrick Cantlay’s best major championship finish ahead of The Open?
It’s not really an ideal title to have, but at the same time it should motivate any players without a major win to finally get over the line.
But that is, of course, much, much easier said than done, particularly given the level of those at the very top.

Unlike McIlroy, who experienced an 11-year wait to win an elusive fifth major title, Scheffler is getting the job done quickly.
He’s won his three major championships so far between 2022 and 2025, with McIlroy having enjoyed an even better run with his first four titles between 2011 and 2014.
Cantlay is among the field for The Open, and he may just be given a boost by the backing from fellow PGA Tour players Scott and Schauffele.

But he’s endured a very disappointing major championship season so far, finishing T36 at The Masters before missing the cut at the PGA Championship and the US Open.
The American has come closest to major success at both the PGA Championship and the US Open, finishing T3 in 2019 and 2024 respectively.
