‘It’s ridiculous’… Justin Thomas can’t believe what 27-year-old PGA star is doing right now

Scottie Scheffler’s tee-to-green play has been Tiger Woods-esque over the past few years.

Quite frankly, no one can get near the 27-year-old in terms of ball striking and approach play; his consistency is unmatched.

Yet, one area of Scheffler’s game remains a work in progress: his putting. Before the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill, he ranked 144th on strikes gained on the greens in the 2024 season.

It’s an area of his game that needs improvement.

Before last week’s Bay Hill event, Rory McIlroy urged Scheffler to experiment with a mallet putter.

“I’d love to see Scottie try a mallet. But selfishly, for me, Scottie does everything else so well,” he said.

Unfortunately for McIlroy, Scheffler listened to his advice and sealed another PGA Tour victory on Sunday afternoon. The American’s putter caught fire, as his final round 66 saw him land his seventh career win. And now, another of Scheffler’s competitors has been talking about his “ridiculous” ability.

Ahead of this week’s Players Championship, Justin Thomas has claimed that what the 27-year-old is doing is better than that of anyone else at the moment.

“It’s ridiculous how good at golf he is. I am really excited to play with him this week,” he said.

He added: “We’ve had a couple of times we’ve been close to playing. We haven’t played together in a while.

“He’s one of these guys when you’re in the scoring tent doing your scorecard, and you see he’s shot 67, and you’re like, ‘What, you shot 67?’. He just plots his way along and gets around. He’s better than anyone else in the world. He’s done it better than anyone for a really long time.”

Scheffler’s form looks ominous for the rest of the field ahead of the Players Championship and then The Masters in April.

If he can maintain this level of putting, it’s hard to envisage how anyone gets close to the scores he could post.

There has been plenty of criticism over his green play since the turn of 2024. However, the American is working meticulously on his game ahead of a busy part of the season. It’s hard to argue that he should be the favourite for any event he lines up in at the moment.
