David Howell did not hold back in his assessment of how good Scottie Scheffler was with the putter during The Genesis Invitational at Riviera as the world number one completed his final round on Sunday.
Scottie Scheffler was just outside the top 10 when he signed for a final round 68, just as the leaders were approaching the turn in California.
However, the American will feel that he could have done so much better this week. And it was fitting that Scheffler’s final couple of shots of the tournament saw him two-putt from 11 feet.

Of course, there were no guarantees that Scheffler would make the birdie. However, it was the manner of his first putt which will disappoint the 27-year-old.
Scheffler never looked like troubling the hole, leaving the putt short. And speaking on Sky Sports (broadcast on 18/2; 20:56), former Ryder Cup player David Howell suggested that he had been nowhere near good enough with the flat stick over the week.
“That just about sums up Scottie’s week. Dire final effort after an atrocious week on the greens,” he said.
One problem American needs to address if he’s going to become an all-time great
Scheffler has the game to add many majors to his 2022 Masters title. Obviously, he is the world number one for a reason. There is so much about his game which is absolutely world-class.
However, his putting remains an issue. Scheffler hit one putt off the green and into a bunker last week at the Waste Management Phoenix Open.
Unfortunately, after a while, the situation becomes much harder to address. Any golfer knows how difficult it can be to pull yourself out of a rut, particularly when the problems are stemming from the putter.
Scheffler is going through a really tough period right now. But there remains so much to like about his game as the season only just kicks into full swing.
