‘Incredible’… Jon Rahm shares what he found ‘unbelievable’ about Scottie Scheffler’s win at The Players

Jon Rahm has shared what he found incredible about how Scottie Scheffler won The Players Championship at the weekend, with the American retaining his title at TPC Sawgrass.

It was an outstanding week at what many describe as the unofficial fifth major championship. The likes of Wyndham Clark and Xander Schauffele led for most of the way, with the pair making up the final group on the Sunday.

But clearly, it is now impossible to write Scottie Scheffler off. The world number one started the final day five shots back of the leaders. And Scheffler was dealing with an injury which restricted his movement.

However, the 27-year-old produced a masterclass to take the title. Scheffler shot a final round 64 to put the pressure on Clark and Schauffele. The pair both needed to hole their birdie putts on the last to force a play-off. Neither could do it, with Clark’s putt lipping out in the most agonising way possible.

It means that Scheffler has become the first player to win The Players in successive years. And one of those who has been so impressed by his performance is Jon Rahm, with the Spaniard suggesting – in comments reported by The Times – that it was a remarkable event.

“When it comes to the golf, the fact I saw TPC Sawgrass come down to having people shoot 20 under par is quite unbelievable. I would have guessed that if you shot 20 under you’re winning by at least five, so the fact Scottie [Scheffler] only won by one is incredible,” he said.

“What an accomplishment, too, to be the first back-to-back champion with pretty much every great golfer in the history of the game having played that tournament. Jesus Christ, that was one that was fun to watch.”

The excitement for The Masters just continues to grow

Certainly, the excitement for The Masters is going to potentially be on another level this year. There are so many intriguing sub-plots heading to Augusta National.

Obviously, many will want to see if Rory McIlroy can finally complete the grand slam. Meanwhile, Rahm is the defending champion and now a LIV Golf star. So seeing him compete with the PGA Tour’s best is going to be fascinating.

But of course, the player everyone will be looking out for is Scheffler. If he is anywhere near being in contention heading into the back nine on Sunday, everyone out there will know exactly what could happen.
