Ian Poulter is synonymous with golf and the Ryder Cup but as he gets older, the time has come for him to pass the baton to the younger generation, including his son.

Poulter is well past his best but continues to play on the LIV Golf circuit.

However, his focus now will be on what comes in the future, especially when it comes to his teenage son, Luke.

This week has seen the Walker Cup take place over at Cypress Point as Team GB and Ireland and Team USA battled it out.

In the end, it was the USA who won out comfortably, seeing off GB&I 17-9.

Unfortunately for Poulter, it was son Luke who suffered the deciding loss as his 2&1 defeat to Preston Stout ensured the US made it to the required 14 points.

Still, as proud as ever, Poulter has taken to social media to sing the praises of his son.

Ian Poulter sends message to son Luke after seeing him lose the Walker Cup

Ian Poulter has always been a proud golfer and he is also now a proud parent as he looks to guide Luke along the next phase of his career.

Indeed, taking to social media to praise Poulter Junior, the Ryder Cup legend had some kind words for his son and the Walker Cup squad.

Posting on Facebook, Poulter showed his class by sending a long message of support to his son.

“We have been a part of many Ryder Cups over the years and know what it means to represent your country and be a part of a team. Luke you represented your country with pride and you were a true gentleman on and off the course this week,” Poulter wrote.

“I know you are disappointed with the outcome, the American team fought hard and retained the Walker Cup but to watch you battle it out on one of the most beautiful golf courses in the world will be something your Mum and I will remember forever. To see you and Charlie win your Foursomes match Saturday morning and then grind out a win after being 4 down through 12 holes on Sunday morning was absolutely incredible. To watch our Luke tee it up in the 50th Walker Cup truly is one of the proudest moments of our lives. We know this is just the start of things to come for you. Let’s reflect and come back stronger next time.”

Ian Poulter will be desperate for Luke to follow his success and more

We all know Ian Poulter is one of the best Ryder Cup players and characters of recent times and it’s nice to see he’s now pushing for his son to follow suit.

Right now, Luke seems a long way from getting to the PGA Tour but he’s clearly on the right path.

Crucially, if he has the mentality of his father instilled in him then he won’t go far wrong in terms of being a success when he does make it to the pro ranks.

Certainly, young Poulter is one to watch and over the next few years, we could be in for an exciting time in golf as youngsters emerge from their fathers shadows to pave their own way in the game.
