Ian Poulter admits he took weeks to recover from ‘horrible’ moment in LIV Golf tournament this year

It was certainly far from a successful year for Ian Poulter on the golf course, with the Englishman registering just two top 10s on LIV Golf throughout the season.

The 2024 season was an underwhelming one for Majesticks GC. They were one of just two teams across LIV Golf who failed to secure a single podium in the team format during the year. Meanwhile, Ian Poulter finished no higher than fifth.

Of course, Poulter will be aware that he has now entered the twilight of his career at the highest level. Nevertheless, the Majesticks team is made up of three of the greatest players the DP World Tour has ever had. Meanwhile, Sam Horsfield showed at LIV Golf Nashville that he has potential, as he finished second to Tyrrell Hatton.

It should however, have perhaps been a podium for the team too. Majesticks appeared to be on for a top-three finish in Tennessee until Poulter played his final three holes in three over par. Agonisingly, his team would miss out on finishing third by two shots.

And speaking on the team’s YouTube channel, Poulter admitted that he took a lot of time to shake off the disappointment.

“I f—– up. I finished bogey, double bogey, par. Dead simple, I f—– up,” he said.

“That was a massive downer for me to be honest with you. That was horrible. That was bad. Yeah, I was not in a good frame of mind for weeks after that to be honest. It was not good.”

Poulter is not someone who is afraid to show his emotions on the golf course. So it is no surprise that he was so disappointed by what happened in Nashville.

The frustration is what LIV viewers need to see more of. While the team format has real potential, it does not have anything like the spice that it needs. But clearly, no-one told Poulter that that is the case.

The Majesticks meanwhile, have – perhaps unsurprisingly – named the same lineup for 2025. Obviously, Poulter, Lee Westwood and Henrik Stenson are co-captains, while Horsfield was their best performer.

However, if their wait for a first podium since 2022 extends beyond 2025, there will surely have to be some serious conversations about the future of their three captains.
