Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry are firmly in contention to win The Zurich Classic this weekend.

The popular duo are in the mix at more than 20 under par and a big final round in the alternate shot format could see them take the win.

Of course, the pairing are arguably the biggest duo out there this weekend and in a way, the PGA Tour would probably like them to win.

However, it’s all to play for and after a struggle on the opening nine holes yesterday, McIlroy and Lowry know that they can ill-afford a repeat.

The duo got things going in the end as a good back nine put them back into contention.

And speaking about round three, McIlroy has said that there was one big moment that changed it all for them.

Rory McIlroy shares the ‘huge’ moment that changed his and Shane Lowry’s round yesterday

Speaking to the media after the round, McIlroy admitted there was a ‘game changing’ moment in the round.

“I think it was about staying patient and knowing the course would present some opportunities on that back nine. I think our patience was rewarded with the chances we gave ourselves,” McIlroy said.

“Nine was huge for momentum, that was a game-changer. I think the birdie on ten also as we both felt we hit out of position off the tee. But we both got up there, my ball was actually in a really good spot so to make birdie from there, nine and ten were huge for us today.”

McIIroy will be desperate to get a win under his belt after struggling for much of the PGA Tour season and at The Masters a few weekends back.

Winning alongside his good friend, despite it being a pairs event, could be the spring board he needs to kickstart his season ahead of the final three majors.

McIlroy, then, will be hoping his A-game follows him onto the course and he can produce the goods.
