A single lie-in made Luke Kwon the single most discussed player in golf.
He was the brightest talent in a star-studded cast at Barstool’s Internet Invitational, but Luke Kwon cost his team a share of $1 million by sleeping through his tee time. Kwon’s team lost the event, and the 33-year-old was subsequently on the receiving end of endless criticism from fans.
Kwon was slammed for his unprofessionalism, as he was perceived to have disrespected an event that was highly sought after everywhere. Kwon apologized for his Internet Invitational behavior, saying he was “genuinely sorry” in an 18-minute YouTube video.
This blew up so much that Kwon became the most searched player on Data Golf following the controversy.
As the drama blows over, Kwon is back in competitive action at the Moutai Singapore Open on the Asian Tour. LIV Golf stars Talor Gooch, Anthony Kim, and Chase Koepka were also part of the event, as Kwon looked to put this controversy behind him with a solid performance in Singapore.
What Luke Kwon shot in his opening round at the Singapore Open
It was not the start to the Singapore Open that Kwon would have wanted. He finished his opening round with a score of 73, one over par, and tied for 108th.
Kwon’s round started with a bogey on the first hole, and he was two over par through four. He then rallied with a birdie on the par-3 eighth, but a bogey and birdie on the back nine left him one over for the round.
It was a disappointing return to action for Kwon, who is trailing the big names at the tournament.
Scoring is low around Singapore, leaving Kwon nine shots back from leader Jeunghun Wang. Gooch leads the better-known names in the field and four under, tied with Koepka.
Luke Kwon’s best-ever performances
Since turning professional, Kwon has delivered several solid performances and secured a victory on the PGA Tour Series-China.
Kwon took the win at the 2019 Qinhuangdao Championship. He beat Canada’s Myles Creighton by one shot in a close finish.
That year, Kwon qualified for the Korn Ferry Tour with six top-10 finishes and nine finishes in the top-25.
Perhaps Kwon’s most high-profile win was the 2024 Creator Classic at East Lake Golf Course prior to the Tour Championship. In a field featuring Wesley Bryan and Peter Finch, Kwon made a birdie on the final hole to win the tournament.

There is a certain irony, however, that the victory for which he is best known took place in the same online environment that he failed to even wake up for at the Internet Invitational.
