This week’s Mexico Open is an excellent chance for lower-ranked PGA Tour players to accrue valuable FedEx Cup points.
After last weekend’s Genesis Invitational, the likes of Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy and Ludvig Aberg are all taking time off ahead of the Arnold Palmer Invitational and Players Championship. Therefore, a slightly weakened field is competing at Vidanta Vallarta.
Furthermore, the Mexico Open has taken added significance in light of the news that LIV Golf players could soon return to the PGA Tour. Donald Trump has seemingly fast-tracked the protracted negotiations between the PIF and the PGA Tour.
If LIV players do return, those golfers battling it out outside the top 70 could be impacted, and NBC’s Damon Hack claimed several players at the Mexico Open are feeling stressed about the ongoing situation.
One golfer who is seemingly not feeling the pressure is 17-year-old sensation Blades Brown.
Blades Brown stars at Mexico Open on second PGA Tour start

The Mexico Open is Brown’s second start of 2025 after he played The American Express. Despite missing the 54-hole cut, Brown made PGA Tour history on day two after shooting 64, the lowest round by an under-18 golfer in 40 years.
After missing the final round at the Pete Dye Stadium Course, Brown made his first PGA Tour cut on Friday.
Brown was three under through his first nine and on track to secure safe passage into Saturday’s tee times. However, a bogey on the par-four 10th, followed by another dropped shot on 16, meant he had one shot to play with heading down the last.
Thankfully, Brown birdied the par-five 18th to move to five under, two shots clear of the cut line.
Mexico Open leaderboard after day two
Brown will need to go low if he’s to contend this weekend. South African Aldrich Potgieter has set an explosive pace after shooting 61 (ten under) on Friday.
Potgieter is just the fourth player in the past 40 years to shoot 61 before turning 21. He currently holds a four-stroke lead over German Stephan Jaeger.
Englishman Aaron Rai is also in contention after shooting 64. Rai is five shots back of Potgieter in solo fourth. Akshay Bhatia, one of the highest-ranked players in this week’s field, is tied for fifth at ten under.
At the other end of the leaderboard, European Ryder Cup hopefuls Paul Waring and Matt Wallace both missed the cut.
What Blades Brown said after making the cut at the Mexico Open
Brown, speaking after his round, expressed his relief at making the weekend.
“I’m so relieved that I was able to make the weekend,” he said. I had about a nine-footer for par on hole 17, and thankfully, that dropped. I’m super thankful to be here. Playing golf on a golf course like this, it’s hard to beat.
“I was kind of watching the cut line just to kind of see what it was going to be, and I knew that it was going to be anywhere around 3 or 4, and I was happy to get in with 5.”
