Harris English got to know Scottie Scheffler very well indeed during the 2021 Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits.

Scheffler has won two major championships this season, and English has finished as the runner-up in both of those.

The two players were part of the 2021 Ryder Cup team that destroyed Europe by a record-breaking scoreline of 19-9.

English and Scheffler share a really good relationship with one another, and the pair have known each other for a very long time.

It wouldn’t be a surprise at all to see Keegan Bradley pair the two players alongside one another at the Ryder Cup in September.

Whoever does get to play alongside the 29-year-old will surely be overjoyed. Scheffler is playing the best golf we have seen in a long time right now.

However, he’s a completely different player to the one who made his debut at the Ryder Cup back in 2021.

Harry English shares what Scottie Scheffler was like at his first Ryder Cup

English was a guest on The Smylie Show with Smylie Kaufman and he was asked to explain exactly what Scheffler was like during his Ryder cup debut four years ago.

The 36-year-old from Valdosta, Georgia, highlighted how crazy it is to think now that Scheffler was somewhat of a controversial pick for the 2021 Ryder Cup.

He explained: There were some younger guys who I did not know as well. Collin Morikawa I got really close with, I got to see another side of him.

I knew Cantlay from our amateur days and got to know Xander better and I was being around Scottie. Scottie was like the controversial 12th pick of that Ryder Cup!

I was actually at Harbour Town with Shane and we were sitting in the locker room talking about it and he was saying I can’t believe Scottie Scheffler, you were thinking about leaving him off that team. Look at what he has done! After he beat Rahm in that singles match, the guy has not lost.

English then opened up about how important the 2021 Ryder Cup was to Scheffler as it gave him the confidence he needed to go on and start winning regularly.

He said: Scottie was not scared to have that match [against Rahm]. Some young guys that would be a little bit too big of a moment for him, but I think that was his realisation that he is really, really good. That was the whole thing. Leading up to that Ryder Cup it was like Scottie hasn’t won, he hasn’t finished it off.

I think once he did that it was like I can do this. That just put him at the top of the confidence and being able to do it.

Since the United States thrashed Europe at Whistling Straits in 2021, Scheffler has gone on to win 17 times on the PGA Tour including four major championships.

Now, four years later, he is the most important player on the US team.

Scottie Scheffler’s career results and Ryder Cup record

There is still some disparity between Scheffler’s sensational individual record and his performances at the Ryder Cup.

Here is how his career results look on the PGA Tour:

ResultsScheffler’s totals
Events played146
Majors wins4
Wins17
Top-5s52
Top-10s72
Missed cuts19

And here is his Ryder Cup record:

Total points3.5

Scheffler will be desperate to improve upon that record when the Ryder Cup rolls into town at Bethpage Black in September.

If he plays anything like he has done over the past few months, he will have no problem whatsoever doing that.
