Harris English is one of a number of golfers in contention at The Open but he’ll need to find at least six shots to turn things around and catch Scottie Scheffler.

Scheffler leads Haotong Li by four shots going into the final round, with English and Rory McIlroy among the players six back.

English himself has played exceptionally well all week but the current top spot is occupied by Scheffler, who seems to have found yet another gear.

Scheffler will simply need to keep his cool and not make any silly mistakes to win his first Open title.

But while the dominance from Scheffler might be frustrating to some, the players he plays with are full of respect for him.

Indeed, according to English, Scheffler is getting what he deserves.

Golf is such a hard sport and there is so much individualism involved that you’d imagine there’d be more needle and jealousy among the players.

However, it’s not the case when it comes to Scottie Scheffler.

You’ll be hard pressed to find anyone who says anything bad about the American and according to English, Scheffler is just an unbelievable golfer.

“He’s unbelievable. Just from a — I call Scottie a friend. I’ve known him for a good while since his amateur days. I’m just so impressed with his work ethic,” English admitted.

“No. 1 in the world for I don’t know how many weeks, but he works harder than anybody I’ve ever seen. He’s got a great system. He’s got — just his belief, and he works like he’s never going to play in another major championship ever again. It’s really impressive.

“Just a great guy overall. He’s easy to root for. I can’t say anything bad about the guy. It’s impressive to watch, and what he’s doing is incredible.”

Harris English says whether he can win The Open

Of the star names on the leaderboard, Harris English is very much one of the players we didn’t expect to see right up there.

The American has gone about his business quietly as he normally does and finds himself in contention.

And according to English, his game is right where he wants it to be ahead of trying to catch Scheffler.

“Yeah, I would say I did hit some good ones, but overall ball-striking-wise it was probably my worst day of the three. Putted really, really good. My speed was really good, made some really clutch par putts. Early in the round made some good up-and-downs. My speed was really good. I just made some really good eight to ten-footers today. Was reading the putts really well,” English continued.

“When I had a question Ramon helped give me some confidence on my reads. Really 18 was the only one I misread all day. So it was solid. I’m happy with where I’m at. I know it’s going to take a special one tomorrow. But who knows, I’ve had some good Sunday finishes this year in the majors. Hopefully can pull it off.

“Yeah, I’m going to go stick with my game plan and strategy that I’ve had all week. It’s one of those, if you start making some 15- and 20-footers and get in that “go mode” then you can start playing really aggressive, and anything can happen. This weather can turn on a dime. I don’t know if I want it to play really tough or really easy. It just is what it is, and you’ve got to — whatever conditions you have at that moment, you’ve got to do the best with, and that’s what I’m going to do tomorrow.”

Much like Rory McIlroy, English will be hoping for a fast start and some unusual errors from Scheffler to make things interesting.
