Patrick Reed became only the second player in history to post a round of 59 on the Asian Tour on Saturday, with the American now leading by three heading into the final round at the Hong Kong Open.
Patrick Reed was one of the biggest names in the field at the Hong Kong Open, with the likes of Tom Kim, Martin Kaymer and Justin Rose all featuring.
But it is Reed who looks set to secure his first win worldwide since 2021, with the 34-year-old holding a substantial lead after a historic performance on Saturday.
Reed went out in 28 after making six birdies on the front nine at Hong Kong Golf Club. Three pars at the start of his back nine may have left some thinking that the hopes of a 59 – a second on the Asian Tour after John Catlin – had been dashed.

However, the three-time Ryder Cup star birdied five of his final six holes to break 60. He hit every single green in regulation across the round to take charge of the tournament.

Of course, it would probably be fair to say that few players divide golf fans quite like Reed. He has certainly come in for a lot of criticism over the years, so it may not have surprised some at all when he decided to join LIV Golf back in 2022.
And it will not shock some to know that some fans have downplayed Reed’s achievement, while others believe that it is further proof of the strength amongst the LIV Golf field.
‘Incredible round’
In fairness to Reed, Tom Kim missed the cut at the Hong Kong Open after finding himself at one under par. Meanwhile, Justin Rose is eight shots back with one round to go, so there is no question – whatever you think of him – that it was a very special performance from Reed.
