Golf fans left reeling after ‘agonizing’ news emerges about Jordan Spieth at The Travelers Championship

Just when things were potentially looking up for Jordan Spieth, his time at the Travelers Championship has been cut short.

Spieth was looking to get into some sort of form ahead of the final major of the year at Royal Portrush in a few weeks’ time.

However, in a disastrous moment for his 2025 season, Spieth has been forced to withdraw from the event in Connecticut with injury, after struggling in round one.

Spieth was trying his best to post a half decent score but looked uncomfortable throughout.

With the PGA Tour confirming the news of Spieth’s withdrawal on social media, it’s caused the usual stir in the comments.

And for golf fans, it seems the sight of seeing Spieth injured again is a tough one to take.

Nobody likes to see one of the world’s best golfers go down with injury but it’s even worse when it’s a player like Jordan Spieth.

Spieth has only just battled back this year from wrist surgery and despite not winning again yet, he has looked sharp at times in 2025.

Now though, he’s out again and fans on X have been left reeling.

One fan suggested Spieth is in plenty of pain, wishing him well.

“That looked agonizing. Feel better”

While another suggested they’d picked up on Spieth’s back problems late on.

“”Saw one of his drives late in the day. Back looked to be really bad. Ever play with a bad back??? It’s not fun.”

One fan rather harshly suggested Spieth may be finished, despite it being his first ever withdrawal.

“Dude is so injury prone. This might be it for him“

While another suggested it was a shoulder problem, rather than a bad back.

“He’s hurting in his shoulder, you can see when you watch him swing. Watched him play. Definitely needs to decompress”

In a more light-hearted comment, one fan suggested Spieth had seen Scottie Scheffler playing so well and thought better of things.

“He saw Scottie at -9 through 16 and gave up”

In a nutshell, it’s tough to see Spieth withdraw, especially given he is a star name among a good field.

What Jordan Spieth said about his latest injury

Of course, with speculation on social media, it’s always good to hear from the man himself and Spieth did indeed provide an update to the media.

Indeed, for the three-time major winner, it’s very much a case of just being unfortunate.

“It was just like midway through on my irons. Everything was great in my gym session, and I’ve been very, very excited to go out and play. Things have been getting better and better, and then my right scapula just kind of locked — like tightened midway through the warmup, and I just kept hitting, and then all of a sudden it was moving up, everything around it started to — and then it was over the left and then it was like everything, so I stopped,” Spieth explained.

“It was both sides of my neck and upper back, and then I moved over to — I quit 30 minutes early from my warmup and came back to the table with my physio who was out there on the range, Marnus, who works with Scottie and JT and some other guys, and tried to get on top of it, and as I was out there playing, I couldn’t — I just wasn’t moving very well, and then it just got worse.

“I was just going to try to see if I could somehow get through at even. It’s a weird situation with an elevated event and no cut and important points and stuff. It’s like, well, what’s the downside if I can finish of just finishing even if it’s ugly, and then I hit my tee shot on 13, and it legitimately really hurt.

“I was walking off that tee, and I’m like, if it’s even harder to turn, then I’m not going to be able to make a backswing that’s even useful, and that’s what happened on the bunker shot. I was like — it’s only going to get worse to finish the round, and it’s not worth it. I thought that was the time.

“I’ve never withdrawn from an event ever anywhere at any level, so I didn’t really know what to do. It just became too much. I didn’t see it turning around until probably Saturday. These things kind of last an extra day, and no matter what I was going to do, it was just going to be — I don’t know, it’s unfortunate. I’ve been doing everything right, and I think it was just very random.

“I may have just slept wrong and then something came along. I don’t know what caused it. I’ve done the same routine. I didn’t change anything up. I took Monday pretty easy. There was no excuses. It was very random. Unfortunate, given the timing.”

Clearly, this is something Spieth has tried to battle through and play on with but at the end of the day, he’s been beaten by the pain.

With an exciting finish to the season to come, it would be desperately unlucky for Spieth not to be involved in the final major and beyond.
