The rivalry between Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau is seemingly intensifying with every week that passes.
With the Ryder Cup now just five days away from starting, all golf fans are dreaming of a Sunday singles showdown between McIlroy and his great rival DeChambeau.
The war of words between the two players began back in April after the final round of The Masters.
DeChambeau criticised eventual Masters champion McIlroy for not speaking to him all day throughout the final round at Augusta National.
Numerous PGA Tour players defended McIlroy after DeChambeau’s comments about him.

And the pair have endured a frosty relationship since The Masters.
Back in July, DeChambeau insisted he will be ‘chirping’ in McIlroy’s ear at the Ryder Cup, if the two come face to face with each other.
Now the Northern Irishman has fired back at the American.
Golf fans react to Rory McIlroy’s comments on Bryson DeChambeau
McIlroy took part in an interview with British publication The Guardian.
And as the conversation shifted towards the Ryder Cup, McIlroy was asked to give his opinion on DeChambeau’s recent comments about him.
“I think the only way he gets attention is by mentioning other people,” McIlroy said. “That is basically what I think of that. To get attention he will mention me or Scottie [Scheffler] or others.”
However, it’s fair to argue that DeChambeau doesn’t need to mention anyone’s name in order to get attention; he’s more than popular enough in his own right.
Many golf fans were stunned by McIlroy’s lack of awareness in regard to how popular DeChambeau actually is.

One made a great point, saying: “He gets more attention these days than Rory, especially after masters, with his YouTube following and challenges and charisma.“ While another echoed a similar sentiment: “Prove it Rory, start a YouTube and let the people decide. He’s never said your name once on that channel, and if he has, it was in good faith.“
Many others supported those views, with comments stating: “Rory sounding very unaware with that comment lol go on YouTube bro or watch a LIV event with the whole crowd following him.“
And: “Bryson winning people over daily on YouTube, IG, etc.“
The hits kept coming as well, with one fan saying: “Bryson is a bigger draw than Rory lmao and a better golfer.“
While another chimed in with stinging criticism of McIlroy: “The irony of Rory saying this is crazy. No one listens to him unless he’s crying like a girl about LIV. His hypocrisy knows no bounds.“
Others were equally passionate in their response.
“Calling someone out for being an ‘attention getter’ seems a bit hypocritical don’t you think?,“ one exclaimed. While another two added: “Rory must live in his own world. Bryson is immensely popular,“ and “Like always, Rory is clueless.“
It seems very clear that the majority of fans believe McIlroy has badly missed the point with his comments about DeChambeau.
Rory McIlroy vs Bryson DeChambeau: Ryder Cup records compared
McIlroy and DeChambeau are both fantastic competitors.
However, the man from Northern Ireland is a lot more experienced in the competition than his American rival.
| Results | McIlroy | DeChambeau |
| Matches played | 33 | 6 |
| Wins | 16 | 2 |
| Losses | 13 | 3 |
| Halves | 4 | 1 |
| Points total | 18 | 2.5 |
McIlroy has historically gone out third in the singles, although he went out fourth in 2023 in order to avoid a potentially contentious clash with Patrick Cantlay and his caddie Joe LaCava.
So it will be interesting to see whether Luke Donald puts the Northern Irishman back into the number three slot.
The golfing world is desperate to see McIlroy take on DeChambeau at Bethpage.
Ideally it would be in the Sunday singles matches but even seeing the duo go head-to-head in a foursomes or fourball match would be incredible to watch.
In a world where many sporting rivalries are merely concocted, McIlroy and DeChambeau genuinely do not see eye-to-eye, and that’s exactly what we want ahead of the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black.
