With Scottie Scheffler absolutely dominating the PGA Tour in 2024, it would not be a surprise if a host of top players were left extremely disappointed with the year that they had, with only a limited number of wins for the rest of the PGA Tour to share around.
A number of big names had underwhelming years. Max Homa seemed to have an outside chance of winning during the final round at the Masters in April. But that would actually prove to be his penultimate top 10 of the entire year.
Meanwhile, both Jordan Spieth and Viktor Hovland brought their years to a premature end due to injury. Spieth’s game has arguably been in decline for a number of seasons, so he decided to undergo surgery on the wrist injury which has been giving him issues for some time.
Coach suggests whether Viktor Hovland or Jordan Spieth will have the better 2025
It is easy to forget now but Hovland won the FedEx Cup as recently as 2023. The Norwegian however, missed the cut at three of the four majors this year.
So it is going to be fascinating to see which players manage to bounce back in 2025. Speaking on The First Cut Podcast, Mark Immelman suggested that he would back Hovland to be more successful.

“To me, it’s hard to pick between that list of Spieth, Hovland and Homa, who is going to get everything figured out? I feel like it comes down to clarity of mind, it comes down to singularity of purpose, and in the end, it’s going to be, of that crowd there, the guy who tends to want to putt it the best,” he said.
“And so, right now, I’m leaning to Viktor Hovland, because he disappeared enough. Watching Viktor was so curious to me, because everyone else is flying here, doing that, playing for all this money, whereas Viktor’s like, ‘no, I’m going to step away from all this, perfect my craft and come back when I’m good and ready’. So that tells me without knowing it for certain that this guy’s like, ‘I know what I’m after, I know what I’ve got to do, and I’m going to switch off all the other noise’.”
How their 2024 stats compare
There has been a little taster of where Homa’s game is currently at, with the American featuring in the Nedback Golf Challenge on the DP World Tour recently. He started strongly before falling away as the week went on, and it seemed that some familiar issues emerged again.
And when you look at the numbers from 2024, it definitely does appear that Hovland is best placed to kick on.
| Strokes gained category | Max Homa | Viktor Hovland | Jordan Spieth |
| Off the tee | 164th | 13th | 15th |
| Tee to green | 111th | 53rd | 71st |
| Approach play | 86th | 18th | 138th |
| Around the green | 39th | 180th | 108th |
| Putting | 106th | 44th | 101st |
| Total | 113th | 31st | 80th |
Hovland’s biggest weakness is clearly around the game, but he leads the way in almost every other category of the trio. But perhaps it will also be fair to say that there may be some players concerned about the prospect of Spieth’s surgery setting him back on the path towards the top.
