A former World Number One faces a nervous wait ahead of the U.S. Open, with a remarkable 23-year-old record under threat.

The year’s third major returns to the notoriously difficult Pinehurst No.2 for the fourth time, ten years after Martin Kaymer took the 2014 title.

Pinehurst promises to provide a much sterner test of golf compared to the recent PGA Championship at Valhalla, where Xander Schauffele’s 21-under-par edged out Bryson DeChambeau.

With anticipation building ahead of the year’s third major, several players still need to confirm their place in the field – and there’s one significant record now under threat.

2013 Masters champion Adam Scott hasn’t missed a major championship for 23 years. But his 92nd consecutive major appearance is now in doubt.

Scott finished T12 at the Charles Schwab Challenge last week, which has helped his cause. The Aussie is currently back in the top 60 but could fall back on the wrong side of the dotted line.

As a result, Scott is now entered into final qualifying on June 3, which is typically dubbed the longest day in golf.

Several big names could miss the U.S. Open

Unlike the PGA Championship, which prides itself on having the most challenging field, the U.S. Open isn’t as lenient with exemptions. Players, generally, have to earn their spot in the year’s toughest major.

As a result, the likes of Scott face the real possibility of missing out entirely.

LIV Golf individual championship leader Joaquin Niemann faces an uphill battle to feature at Pinehurst. The Chilean sits outside the top 60 in the world and, unless he features in the June 3 qualifiers, will miss out on the third major of the year.

Another LIV Golf star who is certain to miss the U.S. Open is Patrick Reed. The American failed to show up to his qualifier in Dallas and now won’t feature at Pinehurst.
