Patrick Reed is an extremely divisive character in the world of professional golf, amongst both his peers and fans of the game.
The opposite can be said of Tiger Woods, whose arrival on the PGA Tour back in the mid-1990s transcended the sport.
Reed obviously hasn’t made an impact on the game like Woods did; in fact, not anything like it.
It’s actually fair to say that the 35-year-old LIV Golf player is just as well known for the controversial incidents he has been involved in throughout his career, as he is for his numerous wins including the 2018 Masters.
He was fairly outspoken throughout the 2025 season regarding his ambitions to make the Ryder Cup team.
It was actually claimed that the US Ryder Cup players wouldn’t have been keen to have Reed on the team at Bethpage Black.
It was suggested that Reed’s presence in the US Ryder Cup team room would cause big problems.
He wasn’t actually even close to making the team in the end, and 2018 remains the last Ryder Cup Reed played in.
Former PGA Tour player lost all respect for Patrick Reed after Tiger Woods incident
Jordan Spieth didn’t want to play with Reed at the 2018 Ryder Cup, so the LIV golfer was paired with Woods twice and they lost both matches.
Previous US captains have found it incredibly difficult to find a partner for Reed, but his singles record is exemplary, having won all three matches he has played.

So should he have been at Bethpage Black this year?
When speaking on the Trey Wingo Podcast, former PGA Tour player Colt Knost responded when asked for his opinion on suggestions that Reed should have been on the US Ryder Cup team.
He said:“Patrick Reed, there was some talk about it. He finished third at Augusta and went out and won at LIV Dallas.
“He had the opportunity to go out there at The Open and make Keegan Bradley look at his name and think about it, and he went out there and missed the cut. I’m sorry, you had a chance to perform.
“I know his record at the Ryder Cup but there is one thing he did that will never leave him is he threw his team and captain under the bus in Paris.
“Patrick Reed got put with Tiger and he complained, I’m sorry I lost all respect right there. You cannot throw your team under the bus like that, when you’re paired with the greatest players of all time.“
What Patrick Reed said about Jordan Spieth after Ryder Cup partnership ended
Reed played with Spieth during the 2016 Ryder Cup at Hazeltine, and they were actually a strong pairing.
The American duo won two, lost one and halved one of the four matches they played together.
However, their partnership was broken up for the 2018 Ryder Cup in Paris.
Reed spoke out about that and responded when asked if he had an issue with Spieth.
“The issue is obviously with Jordan not wanting to play with me,” he said.
“I don’t have any issue with Jordan. When it comes right down to it, I don’t care if I like the person I’m paired with or if the person likes me as long as it works and it sets up the team for success.
“He and I know how to make each other better. We know how to get the job done.”
In fairness to Reed, that was a demonstration of remarkable honesty. It will clearly be very difficult for him to make a Ryder Cup team in the future unless he qualifies automatically.
