LIV Golf star Tyrrell Hatton received a surprise call-up for the GB & Ireland Team Cup squad, which Justin Rose is captaining.

The Team Cup is a match between Continental Europe and GB & Ireland at Abu Dhabi Golf Resort. The event is set to take place in January 2025.

Francesco Molinari will lead the European side in the three-day competition as some of Europe’s Ryder Cup hopefuls – on both teams – gain much-needed matchplay experience.

Hatton is on course to make the 2025 Ryder Cup side for Bethpage Black after an impressive run of form during the autumnal stretch of the DP World Tour season, which included a victory at the lucrative Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

Hatton is excited about competing at the Team Cup, but one Spanish player is far from pleased.

Before 2023, the Team Cup didn’t include any LIV players, with the DP World Tour sticking to its rigid policies. Pablo Larrazabal, who made a fleeting LIV appearance in 2022, missed out as a result.

Now, the Spaniard has reacted to Hatton’s selection.

“Things change very fast,” wrote Larrazabal. “2 years ago, they didn’t have the same thoughts… unlucky to me then… or lucky them.”

LIV Golf landscape changing after Tyrrell Hatton decision

The DP World Tour, unlike the PGA Tour, appears to be coming around to the idea of LIV players jumping between the breaking league and the traditional circuit.

Whenever a European event gets underway, at least three or four past or present LIV players are on the field. It’s becoming a regular occurrence and a sign of the times.

If a mega-money deal between the PGA Tour and the PIF fails to materialise, the DP World Tour becoming the focus for the Saudis won’t come as a surprise.

Clearly, fines and sanctions aren’t an issue for those wanting to compete, and Hatton and Jon Rahm are doing their best to find a way around the problem.
