Sometimes, golf gets the better of even the best players in the world and for European Ryder Cup hopeful Matt Wallace, it’s kicked him right where it hurts at the worst time possible.

Wallace is hoping to make the Ryder Cup team and has been playing as much golf as possible in a bid to get Luke Donald’s attention.

As it stands, Wallace is a bit of an outsider for the team, although he is in the top 12 players in Europe this season.

However, unless Wallace can get into the top six, he’s likely not to be handed a captain’s pick, given Donald already has his favourites from 2023.

And now, at the Danish Golf Championship this week, Wallace suffered a loss of form at the worst possible time.

Matt Wallace admits to having a bad time at the Danish Golf Championship

A player like Matt Wallace really needs to be making every tournament count but over in Denmark, his Ryder Cup chances seem to have unravelled thanks to one round of golf.

Going into round four, Wallace was at least in the mix to an extent after rounds of 71, 70 and 71 again.

However, in an utterly disastrous final round, Wallace carded a shocking score of 81 to finish way down in 64th.

It’s a bitter blow for the Englishman but in true honest fashion, he’s spoken out.

Writing on his personal Instagram account, Wallace posted a heartfelt message and took responsibility for what has been a miserable week for him.

“Dark day for me today but I showed myself that I never quit. A cracked driver at the start of the week and struggled from then but I own my score this week. Wasn’t good enough. Thankyou to all the Danish fans who showed their support. Can’t wait for the British masters next week”

Matt Wallace needs a miracle for Ryder Cup selection

He might have been determined all year to make the team but right now, Wallace’s dream is looking like it’s going to end in failure.

Despite sitting in 11th, he really needs a top six spot. The problem is that they seem pretty set in stone right now.

Then, below the six are players like Shane Lowry and Ludvig Aberg, who are certainties to be picked, while we also have Jon Rahm way down the ranks who will be picked if Donald is allowed.

Matt Fitzpatrick also sits below Wallace but has found form lately and was part of the 2023 winning team in Rome.

All in all, Wallace is right on the line in terms of being selected but it really does feel like there are just a few more ahead of him right now in the eyes of Donald.
