A series of changes to the PGA Tour could be set to safeguard golf’s elite players and make life a lot harder for those trying to break through into the professional game.
Smaller fields will come into force in 2026, and the number of available cards will be cut from 125 to 100. What’s more, there will be fewer Korn Ferry Tour cards and also a big adjustment to Monday qualifiers. Just two qualifiers advance at 132-player events, and no qualifiers are allowed in 120-player fields.
Unsurprisingly, the changes were met with scepticism. Brandel Chamblee slammed the proposals, and several players now face an uncertain future on the PGA Tour.
However, One elite-level star who could be pleased with the changes is Rory McIlroy.
What Rory McIlroy has said about PGA Tour changes

Before the 2024 Arnold Palmer Invitational, McIlroy revealed he supported making the PGA Tour more exclusive.
“I’m all for making it more cutthroat, more competitive,” McIlroy said. Probably won’t be very popular for saying this, but I’m all for less players and less Tour cards, and the best of the best.”
DP World Tour golfer Eddie Pepperell opposes McIlroy’s view, however.
With invites for PGA Tour events being handed out to golfers who are clearly past their best, Pepperell is concerned about what could happen to golf’s traditional circuit.

Eddie Pepperell disagrees with Rory McIlroy’s PGA Tour comments
Speaking on the latest edition of the Chipping Forecast, Pepperell raised concerns about the number of invites being handed out to players who are past their prime while younger prospects miss out.
“Not to get too down on things. I am not going to make a difference to the landscape of professional golf; I don’t think any of those invites are going to make much of a difference,” the Englishman said.
“I don’t think 90% of the field is going to make much difference to the future landscape in professional golf, but for the first time in a long, long time, we are starting to see a bit of a condensing occur in professional golf. It has always expanded, expanded, expanded. In prize fund terms, it has, but if you look at the moves on the PGA Tour, shorter fields, a shorter, smaller tour.
“There’s a contraction occurring. Like the universe, if it expands or contracts, who knows how far it will contract. That is the trend which would worry me.”
Pepperell continued: “And that’s where I fundamentally disagree with someone like Rory McIlroy because I think he would sit on the side of things where he could afford it if it massively contracted. I think you need to be very careful as it’s hard to stop that momentum when it occurs and you do not want to end up with a LIV type formula, put it that way.”
How do PGA Tour invites work?
The PGA Tour’s invite system seems slightly unfair to the Monday qualifiers and those who narrowly missed out on full status.
For example, in 2024, Adam Scott received an invitation to the Arnold Palmer Invitational, his third straight invitation to a Signature Event. Had the Aussie not received an invite, he wouldn’t have been eligible to compete.

Webb Simpson, who is a player director, also found his way into the field at Bay Hill thanks to a sponsor exemption.
The tournament organisers seem to have the discretion to select which players can compete in the event, regardless of whether they have qualified.
