The PGA Tour Policy Board has officially approved the proposed changes to the tour, and the decision hasn’t gone down well.

Field changes will take effect from the start of the 2026 season. Adjustments to the FedEx Cup points system will start in January 2025. The news comes just one day after ten DP World Tour players earned PGA Tour cards for the 2025 season.

Furthermore, the number of available cards is set to be reduced from 125 to 100. Brandel Chamblee, who is never afraid to share his opinion on the PGA Tour, has since reacted to the news.

Chamblee was concise in his thoughts on the matter in response to The Athletic’s Gabby Herzig, who spelt out the changes on X.

“Sad day for the Tour,” he wrote.

Chamblee also criticised the decision to pay USA Ryder Cup players after a groundbreaking decision was made last week ahead of next September’s Bethpage Black event.

PGA Tour changes explained ahead of 2025 season

Let’s examine the finer details of the approved changes. Regarding eligibility and membership, the number of Korn Ferry Tour cards has decreased from 30 to 20, while the ten DP World Tour cards remain the same.

There’s also been a big adjustment to Monday qualifiers. Four qualifiers will remain at 144-player field events. However, only two qualifiers will advance at 132-player events. No qualifiers will be in the 120-player fields.

Field sizes will also decrease, with open tournaments played on one course going from 156 to 144. The Players Championship will move to a 120-field size.

Regarding changes to the FedEx Cup, the majors and The Players will see a slight increase in points for the player who finishes second and a decrease in points for the players who finish 11 and below. Signature events will see a reduction in points for the players who place seventh and beyond.
