Cam Smith missed the cut at the BMW Australian PGA Championship on Friday.

Smith began the Australian PGA Championship with a round of two-under-par 69 on Thursday, but disaster struck for him during the second round on Friday.

The 32-year-old put in a truly awful performance at Royal Queensland Golf Club, and ended up carding a round of four-over-par 75.

Smith admitted his game had been terrible before the Australian PGA, and it seems as if nothing changed in that regard in Brisbane.

Which LIV golfer do you most want to see return to the PGA Tour?

To make matters worse for him, Smith was upstaged by his two playing partners in Australia, with Marco Penge and Min Woo Lee ending up at seven and eight-under-par respectively after two rounds.

Now it will be a case of back to the drawing board for the 2022 Open champion.

We all know how good Smith is and exactly what he is capable of, but he will be well aware that he simply hasn’t been good enough over the past six-seven months.

So the poor form he has been showing recently must be so hard for him to accept.

Smith spoke to reporters after his poor second round in Brisbane and admitted that he was very ‘confused’, as quoted by Golf Digest Australia.

He said: If you had told me that was gonna happen this morning when I was warming up, I would have told you otherwise.

I don’t know. I just don’t know. I’m so confused.”

Smith became a father earlier this year for the first time, and the effects that life changes like that can have on people cannot be underestimated.

The Australian will undoubtedly be just fine moving forward. He just needs a bit of time to work hard on his game during the off-season after reflecting honestly on what really let him down in 2025.

What Gary Player said about Cameron Smith joining LIV Golf

Has Smith’s move to LIV adversely affected his golf game?

Many people would answer yes to that question.

Golfing legend Gary Player was stunned to see Smith join LIV Golf just after he won the 2022 Open Championship.

Dustin Johnson and Cameron Smith, I was surprised they took the money but that’s their choice. But I believe once you’ve decided that’s your tour, you should not be allowed to come back and play regular tournaments. I don’t like 54-hole tournaments, nor the team side of it.

“Personally I think you shouldn’t be allowed to dress in shorts either. But the freedom to choose is important. The thing that irks me is it’s become a damn war. Can’t stand it.”

Whether Smith regrets his move to LIV now is anyone’s guess.

However, if he doesn’t improve his golf next season, some tough conversations may need to take place in Smith’s camp.
