Dustin Johnson admits there are two areas of his game he really needs to ‘sharpen up’ after round one at LIV Chicago

Dustin Johnson opened up with a fine round of four-under par 67 at LIV Golf Chicago on Friday.

Johnson – The 4 Aces captain – is tied for the lead in Chicago alongside Sergio Garcia, as he hunts down his first win on LIV Golf in 2025.

It has been a challenging season for the 41-year-old so far, with inconsistency undermining his chances of winning.

Johnson’s seven-under par round of 64 at LIV Andalucia in July was truly spectacular, and that proved he still has what it takes to compete.

However, Johnson has really struggled in the major championships in 2025, and many believe that he has lost the hunger to work hard and compete at the highest level.

That said, his round at LIV Chicago on Friday proved that he very much still has the desire to win golf tournaments.

Despite shooting four-under par, it wasn’t all good for the two-time major champion on Friday.

Johnson was asked to sum up his round of golf in Chicago on Friday.

He said: “Yeah, obviously it was really solid. Tough conditions. It was really windy, tough flags. Played pretty solid. Made a few mistakes. Hit some really poor wedge shots.

“Other than that, bogeying 3 with a wedge from the fairway and then had a few good chances coming in. But other than that, it was a really solid day. Hit a lot of really good iron shots. Drove it halfway decent. When I did miss it, I missed it on the right side and gave myself opportunities.“

It’s actually great to hear Johnson say that after his opening round at LIV Chicago.

It proves that he’s not happy with a round of four-under and is hungry for more. That’s the kind of determination and fight we all want to hear from Johnson more often.

Dustin Johnson on the difference between LIV and the PGA Tour

Johnson was delighted to be leading LIV Chicago after day one at Bolingbrook Golf Club.

His game looked to be in pretty good shape and a round of 67 considering the windy conditions was very impressive from Johnson.

Johnson was asked how nice it felt to be sitting at the top of the leaderboard after the first round in Chicago.

He said: “Yeah, especially with three rounds, you’ve got to get off to a good start. That’s the most important. That’s important in any golf tournament, but getting off to a good start is really important out here, especially with the quality of players that we have. It’s hard to come from behind.

“You need to be within a couple shots of the lead going into Sunday to have a chance.“

It is clearly more important to get off to a good start in LIV events than it is on the PGA Tour.

Players have more rounds to make up for a slow start on the PGA Tour, whereas that simply isn’t an option on LIV.
