Whether you love him or hate him, Bryson DeChambeau has clearly benefitted from his LIV Golf move and has significantly improved his public image over the past year.

With the help of a booming YouTube channel, DeChambeau has emerged as one of golf’s prominent personalities and has captured the imagination of regular sports fans. Whether it was his hole-in-one over his house or his ‘Break 50’ attempt with Donald Trump, the 31-year-old’s content is even engaging for non-golf enthusiasts.

Many now view DeChambeau far differently from the brash youngster who broke through onto the PGA Tour in 2016. Clearly, he’s learnt from his mistakes and become a better person for it.

Unfortunately, during the PGA Tour vs LIV Golf ‘Showdown’, an incident led many to suggest that DeChambeau’s past demeanour might not be behind him.

Colt Knost left ‘bothered’ by what Bryson DeChambeau did at ‘The Showdown’

With DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka being heavily beaten by Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler, the two-time US Open champ decided to take out his earpiece, a decision which angered golf fans.

DeChambeau acted annoyed throughout, and PGA Tour veteran Colt Knost said the LIV star’s behaviour did not portray someone who wanted to entertain.

“You’re supposed to be having fun, talking trash. He was playing terribly. What did he do? He took his earpiece out. And that bothered me,” Knost explained.

“I was like ‘, Okay, here is the guy who wants everybody to love him; everyone thinks he is this great entertaining thing on YouTube’, which he is. But he controls the narrative out there. This show, when he was under the lights having to play against two of the best in the world in, Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler, things weren’t going well; he was all over the place. He took his earpiece out and pouted a little bit; I was like that is not right. That’s not what we do if we are trying to entertain.”

Bryson DeChambeau should escape criticism after incident at ‘The Showdown’

Knost is correct; from an entertainment perspective, DeChambeau was not in top form in Las Vegas. But, if there’s one man who probably deserves some leeway, it’s DeChambeau.

Throughout his career, he’s had to deal with wholly justifiable criticism. But, given all DeChambeau did throughout 2024 and the way he expanded the game, his decision to take his earpiece out at Shadow Creek is barely a hiccup.

Golf fans don’t know what could have happened that day. DeChambeau might have been feeling unwell or simply lacking energy. However, one thing is clear: he has done enough over the past 12 months to ensure that his reputation remains unblemished for now.
