Collin Morikawa would love a win at any event on the PGA Tour at the moment and after seeing Scottie Scheffler dominate at the PGA Championship, the two-time major winner has admitted he needs to take something from Scheffler’s game.

Morikawa hasn’t won since 2023 and prior to that, his last win came back in 2021 when he won The Open at Sandwich.

For a player of his quality, Morikawa should be winning more often and he knows it.

However, there have been signs in recent months. He nearly caught Scheffler at the TOUR Championship at the back end of last season, while he’s had a number of near-misses in 2025 already.

Still, after seeing Scheffler win and also giving up shots himself at Quail Hollow, a frustrated Morikawa has spoken of how he needs to channel a bit of Scheffler’s brilliance.

Collin Morikawa admits where he needs to be like Scottie Scheffler

With so many comments around Scottie Scheffler at the moment, it’s obvious that among his peers, he’s very much admired and widely regarded as the best there is.

His last few performances have been brilliant but different as well. He romped home at the Byron Nelson in record style, whereas at the PGA, he battled hard to eventually win by five.

And it is that competitive nature that Collin Morikawa has admitted he needs to take a bit of.

“I don’t try and be harsh like that. But you just have to talk things through. I don’t think people do that enough with their team around them. They kind of internalize it. Sometimes you just got to let out your frustration,” Morikawa told Golf.com.

“It’s small things,” he said. “Because I know this game is so — everything is just by the thread of a needle, right? Small margins could mean big results. At the end of the day, I can live with bad golf. But bad golf to me is poor swings, you know, and poor execution. When I am giving away shots that I feel like I shouldn’t — and me being, I feel like, a mentally strong player — that’s what’s frustrating.”

Going into more details on his current issues, Morikawa then made his comment about Scheffler and his winning mentality.

“I set high standards for myself, and when you don’t reach them, sometimes you go a little crazy. But sometimes it wakes you up. For me, at the end of the day, it’s like, how do I just wake up a little bit more, to be firing. You can see the competitiveness in Scottie, right? You can really see that through. That’s what I need to kind of pull out of myself again, because that’s what I had when I first came out.”

Collin Morikawa’s 2025 form suggests a win is close

Golf is always a game of fine margins and what we are seeing from Scottie Scheffler right now is not normal really.

On any given week, any of the top players in the world can win and Collin Morikawa is among a group who have put themselves in winning positions but not over the line.

He finished top 20 – including two seconds – in the opening six events of the season and while lately that form has dipped a touch, he’s still not far off.

A T17 at the Truist could have been a lot better, while he wasn’t far off at one point in the PGA before tumbling down to T50.

Despite that finish, though, Morikawa is a dangerous player and not far off his best form. If he can just put everything together, then he’ll get that elusive win quickly.
