Collin Morikawa is a fairly divisive figure on the PGA Tour and he ended the 2025 season with more negatives than positives in his column.

Morikawa actually made a fine start to the 2025 PGA Tour season with two runner up finishes in his first four events.

However, his form nosedived after that, and he recorded only one top-10 finish after The Players Championship in March.

Morikawa was criticized for avoiding his media duties at Bay Hill back in March, when he lost out on the Arnold Palmer Invitational by a single stroke.

The 28-year-old definitely comes across as aloof sometimes but he is one of the best golfers in the world when he’s on top form.

Golfers at the very highest level require a little bit of arrogance, don’t they?

The form he showed in general was nowhere near what we’re used to seeing from him.

Morikawa’s poor putting on the PGA Tour let him down badly, but there were plenty of other issues he has with his game.

The two-time major champion will be desperate to rediscover his best golf during the off-season and on into 2026.

However, ahead of the new golfing year, he wants to see the PGA Tour make a change.

The rules of golf seem to be a hot topic right now, with numerous high profile players calling for change moving forward.

Do you think golfers should receive a free drop from divots in the fairway?

During an appearance on the Fore Play Golf YouTube channel, Morikawa responded when asked whether golfers should receive a free drop from divots in the fairways.

He said: I mean, the hardest thing is you would never know what a divot is. I don’t care about a divot, I hate mud-balls, mud-balls are the worst.

I don’t mind playing out of a divot. I mean, Sam Burns got screwed somewhere this year, right, but mud-balls are just like, that’s just fully out of your control.

I’d rather play out of a divot than play with mud-balls because they’re so unpredictable. You honestly don’t know where it’s going to go.

You play the side it is going to go to but you have zero control.

Patrick Reed disagrees with Collin Morikawa

LIV Golf star Patrick Reed recently delivered his verdict on whether golfers should receive a free drop from fairway divots.

Patrick Reed has his say on the free drop from fairway divots debate

“You should be able to take relief. I mean, why don’t you get rewarded for a great drive? I mean, that stuff for me, it’s like, alright, if we can do all the other stuff on fixing things, why is it that we don’t get rewarded for a good golf shot?”

The thing is, as Morikawa noted, the free drop from a fairway divot rule would seriously be left open to interpretation.

Sure, it’s unfair when you nail a drive down the middle and find your ball nestled at the bottom of an old divot.

However, that’s the way golf was originally meant to be played. You have to play your ball ‘as it lies’.

And the same can be said for mud-balls. The bottom line is that it happens to everyone who plays the game.

Morikawa will most likely be left disappointed if he is hoping the PGA Tour change their stance on mud-balls ahead of the 2026 season.
