Collin Morikawa is a two-time major winner and one of the best golfers in the world but even the best around need some advice when things first get going.

Morikawa has won the PGA Championship and The Open but since getting to two majors in 2021, he’s struggled to make an impression since.

Morikawa has also not won on the PGA Tour since 2023, marking a sharp downturn in form for the American in the last few years.

Still, Morikawa can still be proud of his success and at the end of the day, most players would be happy to finish their career with two major wins.

Over time, Morikawa will no doubt find his way again and he could do well to look back at the advice he was given by both Justin Thomas and Webb Simpson when he was first starting out.

The advice Justin Thomas gave Collin Morikawa when he first joined the PGA Tour

With Collin Morikawa still ranked number eight in the world, it’s hardly a time to panic.

However, just like every player, it’s sometimes worth going back to basics and remembering some of the advice and lessons from when they first broke into the game.

Indeed, speaking to the PGA Tour’s media channels, Morikawa has revealed what Justin Thomas told him when he first emerged on TOUR.

“JT once gave me some advice once that if you’re good enough then you’re going to make it out here at some point, like everyone is always in a rush and I get that it’s how today’s world works, but you just have to keep believing in yourself,” Morikawa revealed.

Going into more detail on the advice he’d had over the years, Morikawa then opened up on what Webb Simpson and Mark O’Meara had told him about his off-course life.

“Then another one from Webb Simpson, was like find a balance in your life. Between Webb Simpson and Mark O’Meara they were like ‘when you’re on the golf course, that’s what you’re doing’ but when you’re away, learn how to balance things and find some hobbies,” he continued.

“Because golf is a lot to us, but there’s so much more in life to enjoy and we’re very lucky in what we do.”

Collin Morikawa’s PGA Tour career so far

While there is an element of frustration around Morikawa in that he might have achieved more by now, it’s worth noting he’s still only 28 and has already had a career most dream of.

Two major wins, another four on the PGA Tour and another two on the DP World Tour mean Morikawa has had a career to be admired.

Couple that with over $40m earned in career money on the PGA Tour alone and numerous Ryder Cup appearances so far, and it’s safe to say Morikawa could retire right now and be happy with his body of work.

Morikawa might well struggle at the Ryder Cup given his form but everyone knows that on his day, he’s world class.

Still, there is more to come and if he does end up finishing up without another major in the bag, then he’ll be disappointed.
