Collin Morikawa has struggled badly over the past few months, so it should come as no surprise that he is working hard in practice in an effort to try and find something ahead of the Ryder Cup.

Morikawa received a captain’s pick from Keegan Bradley last month and he will make his third Ryder Cup appearance in two weeks’ time at Bethpage Black.

Just two months ago at The Open, Morikawa was completely lost with his game as he went on to miss the cut at Royal Portrush.

He had no wins to his name on the PGA Tour in 2025 and recorded only four top-10 finishes.

Morikawa was actually in danger of missing out on the US Ryder Cup team due to his poor form, and some fans still believe he should not have received a captain’s pick from Bradley.

However, the man from Los Angeles, California, is working tirelessly to turn things around ahead of the showdown with Team Europe at Bethpage.

In his heyday, Morikawa was relentless when it came to hitting fairways and greens.

He was actually just as accurate as ever off the tee during the 2025 season, while his iron play returned back to its very best.

So what has been the issue as far as the six-time PGA Tour winner is concerned? His answer may well surprise you.

Morikawa was asked if there is something specific he is working on in his game right now.

He said: Yeah. Look, I know after the Tour Champ everyone felt like it was a long season. I got straight to work the Monday right after. I’m really trying to figure out these irons and it’s crazy to say, but — and the putting as well. I’ve got a new putter in the bag this week, which I did a lot of work that Monday right after Tour Champ. The irons, I want to show up at Bethpage and be able to just aim five yards left, 10 yards left, three feet left and just fire and pepper at those pins because that’s what people, you know, people get excited about.

Obviously you need to make the putts, but that’s just something I’ve been fighting over the past few years is just there’s a difference of missing it 20 feet left and 20 feet right. It’s the same number no matter what, you know, strokes gained and stuff, but I want to know where my misses are going. That’s what I’ve been working on really, really hard and it’s been really good work, just got to keep getting where I want to be in a couple weeks. But everything’s feeling great so far heading into this week at least.

Why Morikawa working on his iron play is so ‘crazy’

It’s common knowledge that one of the best parts of Morikawa’s game since he came out on Tour has been his iron play.

Here are the two-time major champion’s strokes gained approach stats over the past six years on the PGA Tour.

Aside from the 2024 season, which was quite clearly an anomaly, Morikawa has been one of the best two iron players in the game, alongside Scottie Scheffler.

The United States need the 28-year-old to be at his very best with his irons at Bethpage later this month.

Morikawa has been really struggling since April but he will be hoping that the Ryder Cup brings the best out of him.
