In a back and forth nobody in golf saw coming in 2024, Colin Montgomerie has now responded again after Tiger Woods replied to Monty’s initial suggestions of retirement.
Woods is back in action at The Open Championship this week and looking to finish his year on a high by at least making the cut around Royal Troon.
Of course, any tournament where Tiger is involved draws crowds, attention, and plenty of quotable pieces for the media to absorb.

This week’s press conference for Tiger was teed up nicely by comments from Colin Montgomerie last week, in which he called for Woods to retire.
What Colin Montgomerie said about Tiger Woods ahead of The Open
Speaking in an interview last week for The Times, the Scotsman called on Woods to call it a day, suggesting he’d struggle around Royal Troon.
“I hope people remember Tiger as Tiger was, the passion and the charismatic aura around him. There is none of that now. At Pinehurst he did not seem to enjoy a single shot and you think, ‘What the hell is he doing?’ He’s coming to Troon and he won’t enjoy it there either,”
Aren’t we there? I’d have thought we were past there. There is a time for all sportsmen to say goodbye, but it’s very difficult to tell Tiger it’s time to go. Obviously, he still feels he can win. We are more realistic.
“These guys [current tour players] only know Tiger Woods missing the cut and he’s better than that, the best we’ve ever seen.”

Since then, Woods has responded to Montgomerie in typical Tiger fashion.
Speaking in his presser this morning, Woods simply replied to the suggestion from Monty, saying:
“As a past champion, I’m exempt until I’m 60. Colin is not,” Woods said.
And carrying the back and forth on further, Montgomerie has once again brought it up.
Colin Montgomerie calls out golf media in response to Tiger Woods
Taking to social media platform X to speak after Tiger’s comments, Montgomerie appeared to lash out at the golf media world and called on any journalists to contact him directly on the matter.
Clearly, Montgomerie has all the respect in the world for Woods and the comments have been printed to sound probably a touch harsher than they were.
Still, the words are then and unfortunately for anyone in sport, this is what can happen.
We’re pretty sure if Colin Montgomerie and Tiger Woods cross paths, then all will be well.
