In terms of European players who are synonymous with the Ryder Cup, there are few better equipped to offer an opinion on the event than Englishman, Colin Montgomerie.

Montgomerie has represented Team Europe with pride eight times as a player before being captain for the win in 2010.

With the Ryder Cup coming up in 2025, excitement is starting to build but so far, headlines have bee dominated by Team USA getting paid to play.

The Americans will get $500,000 each and while Keegan Bradley has said his will go to charity, there remains uncertainty around the rest of the cash.

And speaking about the American’s getting such riches, Montgomerie has admitted he’s not impressed.

Colin Montgomerie slams Team USA for being paid at the Ryder Cup

In quotes taken from the Scottish Sun – via Sports Boom – Ryder Cup legend Montgomerie has become the latest to find the Americans being paid as out of the touch with the event.

“What we’re talking about is the evil word, money. It can destroy a lot of things,” Montgomerie said.

“And I think that golf has been has been part of that, and we are now talking about one team getting paid to play in the Ryder Cup. My God, I mean, I would have paid to play in it, to have the honour to play in the Ryder Cup, never mind wanting money to do so.

“There’s something a little bit awry with players being paid to play. It leaves a sour taste. You can’t have a competition where one team’s being paid and the other isn’t.

“The funds could have been allocated towards grass-roots golf, ladies’ golf, junior golf, or golf in schools. That’s what I was hoping that money would go to as opposed to make the wealthy wealthier.”

Colin Montgomerie risks upsetting Tiger Woods again

Earlier in 2024, Montgomerie caused a stir by suggesting that Tiger Woods should retire.

Woods hit back at ‘Monty’ at the time and it became one of the talking points of the summer among the golf media.

Now, with Woods wanting the US Team to be paid as much as possible, Montgomerie has gone against what the 15-time major winner thinks once again.

This could end up being the battle we never knew we needed or had in golf and it will be interesting to see if Woods is asked about these comments in the near future.
