Chris Como has suggested that one major champion is actually still some way from reaching his full potential, while the coach backed him for another great run at some stage in the future.

Golf is currently enjoying a real golden era with so many outstanding players, whether they play on the PGA Tour or on LIV Golf.

The likes of Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau, Collin Morikawa and Justin Thomas all have two major titles each, and it would be no surprise to see them all add to those tallies before they call time on their careers.

One player you may not have expected back in 2015 to reach the end of 2024 having not added to his one major title is Jason Day, with the Australian enduring a couple of slumps in form in the years since winning the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits.

Jason Day tipped for another run at the top

Day has had back issues, and that appears to have previously prevented the 36-year-old realising that potential which took him to the world number one spot. He has actually not featured in the Presidents Cup since 2017.

But he won on the PGA Tour last season for the first time in five years, and he found himself in contention to win an Olympic medal in Paris.

Speaking to Talk of the Tour ahead of the event at Le Golf National, Day’s coach Chris Como shared how excited he is about his future.

“He’s been really trying to get his body in place to feel like he can play for a long time, he loves the game, just get everything situated to where he just feels good from a body perspective. I think he did a really good job of really understanding his body, how to work in the gym, some swing changes, all that to really day to day feel a lot better with his body. And had a really nice week out in Dallas and won that week, so it was awesome,” he said.

“I think Jason’s a guy who completely loves the game, he’s got so much competitive fire, I think that we’re nowhere near seeing what he can really do again, I think he’s got another great run ahead of him.”

So much golf ahead of the Australian

It may surprise some that Day is still only 36 years of age as he seems to have been in and around the top of the game for such a long time now – he turned professional 18 years ago.

If he can get his body to a place where it can handle the demands of playing in the biggest events, then he clearly has the potential to add to his one major title.

He is one of the top 30 players in the world right now, and he looks set to make his return to the Presidents Cup team later this year, with Day currently sat fourth in the standings. He is also well placed to qualify for the Tour Championship on the PGA Tour.

That is an impressive record for someone who has not won in more than a year, and perhaps it just highlights how there is indeed one more run at the top of the game left in the tank for Day.
