Golf Channel reporter Todd Lewis has shared how many major championships he now believes Xander Schauffele could end up with after he won The Open Championship at Royal Troon.

Xander Schauffele has done brilliantly to set up a debate regarding whether he or Scottie Scheffler has been the golfer of the year for 2024, with the world number one winning six times before July.

Schauffele has however, won two of the last three majors. The 30-year-old broke the record for the lowest score to par in a major championship at the PGA Championship at Valhalla, while he was flawless on Sunday at Royal Troon as he won The Open.

Some think Scheffler would trade places with Schauffele in 2024, with the latter having the edge in the battle for the majors. But Schauffele has now become the latest name to move himself onto two major championships in his career, with Scheffler, Bryson DeChambeau, Jon Rahm, Justin Thomas and Collin Morikawa also in that camp.

Of course, all of those players are outrageously talented with the potential to win many more. But speaking on Golf Channel Podcast, Lewis suggested that Schauffele has the ability to triple his current tally.

“I do feel like, as of now, I feel like he has, from what I have seen over the last few months, the most potential. I do think that,” he said.

“You mentioned Brooks and Bryson and Jon Rahm and those guys, I’m not here to slam LIV, but those guys aren’t facing the quality of players week-in and week-out that the guys on the PGA Tour are, so I feel like Xander is, from all the things that I’ve mentioned, that confidence and that belief, I think that he has probably the better potential to get four, five, maybe six major championships once his career is over from that group that you mentioned.”

PGA Championship saw American make a big statement

It really did feel as though Schauffele getting that first major win was a particularly crucial moment in his career, as he was arguably starting to gain a reputation for being an outstanding player who may not have what it takes to get quite across the line in the game’s biggest events.

Schauffele went into the PGA Championship off the back of a disappointing final round at the Wells Fargo Championship the week before, where he was simply unable to keep up with Rory McIlroy.

But he ensured that no such reputation was able to take hold. And with the consistency Schauffele has, there is little reason why he cannot get to the six majors he has been tipped for – at least.
