Charl Schwartzel was among the early finishes on day four of The Masters, a tournament he won in 2011.

Schwartzel won The Masters by two strokes at Augusta National, following in the footsteps of fellow South Africans Gary Player and Trevor Immelman.

A two-time PGA Tour champion, Schwartzel loved the condition of Augusta at The Masters this year, on what was his 16th appearance.

The 40-year-old currently plays on LIV Golf, and was one of 12 players on the Saudi-backed tour to take on Augusta this week.

And after rounds one and two, he was one of seven such players to make the cut, with the likes of Phil Mickelson and Sergio Garcia missing out.

Charl Schwartzel says an amateur golfer will ‘probably shoot 100’ around Augusta

An early started on the final day, Schwartzel has now provided an update on his future at the major championship, along with advice for the amateurs out there.

Asked after his final round if he foresees a situation where he decides he won’t take on The Masters every year, he replied: “I’ll stop playing when they ask me to stop.”

And when it was suggested it could happen when he’s too old like Gary Player and he can’t do it anymore, Schwartzel responded: “Yeah.”

And finally sharing tips for an amateur taking on Augusta, he said: “You’ll have a good time. You’ll have a good time. You’re going to probably shoot 100, but enjoy it.”

Schwartzel unsurprisingly shot well below that score in his latest attempt at Augusta, having entered the clubhouse for the final time this week on two-over.

The South African carded an opening round 74 on Thursday in Georgia, followed by three successive rounds of 72.

Asked to analyse the good, the bad and the ugly from his four rounds, the one-time major champion said: “It’s been a while since we’ve had this amazing weather out here, so from that point of view, this is what you picture Augusta when you close your eyes. So that made it a really nice week.”

Discussing the good, he noted: “Played great, got nothing out of it. Didn’t make any putts. I felt like I putted okay, but it was one of those weeks where things don’t go your way.”

And on the bad, Schwartzel commented: “There was no real bad. I mean, there in the second, third round, iron play, a few loose iron shots from the middle of the fairway.

“But overall I don’t think people realize the small margins out here. The weeks that you play well out here is the weeks that you don’t even realize it but the bounces go your way.

“But you definitely realize it when they’re not going your way. There was a lot of shots this week that was one foot away from making birdies, and they were bouncing one foot the other way and I was making bogeys.”
