Cameron Young is well known for his somewhat stoic approach to the game, and life in general.

It’s not very often Young is seen cracking a smile out on the golf course, and that was no different during his opening round of the Wyndham Championship.

Young has been criticised for several outbursts of anger this season on the PGA Tour.

Back in June, Young had an animated disagreement with rules officials at the US Open, and he generally seems unhappy about everything going on with his golf game right now.

The 28-year-old has played really poorly in 2025 by his standards, and that has obviously been causing him real frustration.

So his round of seven-under par at Sedgefield Country Club on Thursday came somewhat out of the blue.

However, he wasn’t overly happy with his 63 it seems.

Young highlighted how the only difference to recent weeks was the fact that a few more putts dropped.

He said: Yeah, I mean, to be honest, nothing really clicked, the ball just kind of started going in a little bit. I started off the day totally the opposite end of that spectrum. I hit it close a few times and missed a few. I think it kind of just evened out and happened to end up looking dramatic on the scorecard, but it wasn’t much of a difference really throughout the day.

Yeah. I mean, frankly, the last five holes there I hit it farther from the hole than I did pretty much the whole day. It’s just a matter of a couple putts going in, and then the one on the last is a bonus. It was one of my worst two or three shots of the day to miss the green right there with a wedge. For that one to go in kind of was just one of those things that you chalk up to golf is golf, funny things happen. I hit it really close a bunch early and didn’t make much. Hit one of the worst shots of the day and make a 3 to finish. That’s just how it is.

Sometimes you’ve just got to smile and take what has been given to you.

Young beats himself up far too much, and he needs to realise that is in fact holding him back.

Cameron Young’s stats on day one at The Wyndham Championship

Young is currently sitting two shots off the lead set by Joel Dahmen, who posted a round of nine-under par 61.

Here is how the 28-year-old’s stats look from day one at the Wyndham:

StatsYoung’s rank
Strokes gained off the tee2nd
Strokes gained approach7th
Strokes gained around the greens38th
Strokes gained putting30th
Strokes gained totalT-3rd

Those numbers from Young are really solid, and if he can replicate that for the next three days at the Wyndham Championship, he may well end the week as the champion.
