There’s nothing worse than seeing one of the best golfers in the world struggling for form and it’s not unfair to say the recent demise of Cam Smith is concerning.

Smith has not looked the same player since moving to LIV Golf and while many on the PGA Tour have seen form come and go over time, Smith’s efforts in the last few years are worrying.

Having won The Open as recently as 2022, many expected the Australian to go on and do more.

At the time of his win at St Andrews, Smith was one of the very best putters around and with a major in the bag, he was expected to go to new levels.

However, we sit here in 2025 now having just watched Smith fail to make the cut in ANY of the four majors for the season.

That is a worrying and eye-opening stat for a player of such talent and according to Smith himself, there is a reason he feels is stopping him perform.

Cam Smith says why he’s missed the cut in all four majors in 2025

Cam Smith can and probably will get back to the levels we’ve seen him at previously but right now, it’s hard not to feel a touch awkward when watching him.

To see a recent major winner seemingly fall so far from his best is not a pleasant watch and the critics among us will suggest the LIV move has caused it.

However, for Smith, it all comes down to what’s going on between his ears, rather than any sort of golf related matter.

“Yes, it sucks to play bad in tournaments that probably mean a little bit more than others,” Smith told Australian Golf Digest.

“I think it’s probably more of a mental issue than actual technique. But yeah, the major results weren’t good.

“Yeah, absolutely. I mean, I’ve been motivated, I think, all year, to try and get a result, and maybe that’s part of the problem, I feel like I’ve done everything right, and not really got much out of it.

“My swing feels the best it’s ever felt and to go out there and perform like that isn’t something I want to do, and it’s something that I shouldn’t do.”

The fact Smith suggests there’s nothing wrong with his actual swing mechanics and technical skill is arguably even worse.

This means the Aussie needs to get sorted mentally and sometimes, that can be the hardest thing to do in professional sports.

Cam Smith’s form in majors since he won The Open in 2022

Smith’s form in the major championships since he triumphed so brilliantly at St Andrews is inconsistent to say the least.

It’s not all bad. Two top tens in 2023 at the PGA and the US Open suggested he was going to be around for a while, while he even managed a T6 at The Masters in 2024.

However, along with those four missed cuts this season, his other results have been far from inspiring.

He missed the cut at The Open last year, and only finished T33 the year after when defending the Claret Jug.

A T63 at the PGA Championship in 2024 and a T32 at the US Open that same year are hardly anything to write home about, while another T34 at Augusta in 2023 is nothing special either.

Hopefully, Smith can get back to his best at some point soon. Golf needs the best players in the world competing against each other at the majors and if Smith is firing, he’s very much in that bracket.
