Butch Harmon has absolutely raved about Scottie Scheffler, while making claims about Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods.

Scheffler is the dominant force in professional golf right now – a position that both Nicklaus and Woods have been in before.

World number one Scheffler has drawn comparisons with Woods in his heyday, but Harmon has now made a fresh claim about Nicklaus.

The Golden Bear is widely considered to be the greatest golfer to have ever graced the game.

Nicklaus himself is a huge fan of Scheffler, and has praised the four-time major winner’s control of his club-face and the way in which he keeps his hands close to his body throughout his golf swing.

And now Harmon has made a startling claim about the 29-year-old from Dallas, Texas.

Harmon watched a lot of Nicklaus in his prime, and he witnessed Woods at the very top of his game, having coached the 15-time major champion for 11 years from 1993 through until 2004.

So there probably isn’t a more qualified person on the planet than Harmon to give his opinion on how Scheffler compares to the two greatest golfers of all time.

The world famous golf coach spoke with SiriusXM PGA TOUR Radio about Scheffler’s brilliance after the 29-year-old won The Open Championship on Sunday.

And Harmon made a quite extraordinary claim about the three golfers.

He said: In all the comparisons and stuff, the Tiger this and that. I think his greatest attribute he has is that he’s the closest thing I have seen to Jack Nicklaus mentally. He makes no mental mistakes. He dumps the ball in the middle of the green when he has to, his iron control is beautiful.

He reminds me more of Jack than he does Tiger. Tiger in winning ways but Jack in the way he plays golf. I have never quite seen a guy who can mimic Nicklaus in the way that he does.

Can you imagine if everybody, all the great players we talk about, had Scottie Scheffler’s head, how much better they’d be?

For Harmon to suggest that Scheffler is the closest player he has seen since Nicklaus is quite the compliment for the current world number one.

Scheffler’s iron play is certainly just as precise as Nicklaus’s was, and what makes him so great is that he plays for the fat part of the green just like the 18-time major winner did.

That ensures that he keeps his mistakes to a minimum while those around him fritter shots away, especially during major tournaments.

The scary thing for Scheffler’s rivals is that he doesn’t seem like he’s slowing down one little bit. Nothing fazes him, and winning at least a dozen more majors really isn’t outside the realms of possibility for him.

Major records: Scottie Scheffler vs Jack Nicklaus vs Tiger Woods

All three golfers possess exceptional records in the game.

The only real difference is that Scheffler is only at the start of his journey right now.

Here are how their records stack up against each other.

The best compliment anyone can give Scheffler is that his numbers do not look out of place, pound for pound, alongside the two most elite players the game has ever seen.

If he continues along the path he is currently on, there is no reason why Scheffler can’t at least get close to emulating the major records of Woods and Nicklaus.
