Rory McIlroy is preparing for his latest assault on The Masters this week and Butch Harmon has revealed what he worked on with him last week.

McIlroy’s trip to see Harmon caused a big stir in the golfing world. The Northern Irishman has been struggling a bit for his best form and called on Harmon for some advice.

In the main, it looks like it worked as he played well at The Valero Open this weekend.

McIlroy finished outright third, albeit some nine shots off the leaders.

But in the main, it was a much-improved performance from McIlroy, who will be delighted with his efforts ahead of teeing it up in Augusta this Thursday.

And speaking ahead of the Masters getting underway, Harmon himself has revealed exactly what he worked on with McIlroy when they met up last week.

Speaking for Sky Sports, Harmon has revealed that it was nothing major he worked on with Rory.

Instead, it was minor details in his swing and the ability to land the ball closer with his short irons and wedges.

“At TPC Sawgrass [The Players] he made 26 birdies and finished like 20th.For his bogeys, he was missing greens with nine-irons and wedges, so that was some of the work we did. We were trying to get his swing from what I would call 150 yards in, which is where he plays most holes from, and control the distance of the ball and the shape of the shot. We worked hard on that,” Harmon said.

“There were a couple of little, minor fixes to his swing that unless I showed you the film, you probably wouldn’t even recognise them. He was very happy, took it away, and said he played really well when he was at Augusta [practice round]. It will be interesting to see how it goes but, I think mindset wise, his head is in the right place and the right space. I think he has much more confidence now in what he is doing, so we will just have to see.”

McIlroy is heading into the tournament s as one of the favourites.

However, with the pressure on his shoulders and him not winning a major since 2014, McIlroy will be hoping he can finally deliver.

Scottie Scheffler is going into the tournament as the world number one and overwhelming favourite.

The American has won two of his last three tournaments and has been tipped to clean up in 2024.
