Bubba Watson might be a two-time Masters champion but when it comes to winning in the modern era, it’s not something that comes quite as easy as it once did.

The popular American is now playing his golf over on the LIV Golf circuit as captain of the RangeCoats GC but it’s safe to say it’s not all been smooth sailing.

Watson has yet to win on LIV and now in his third season, he’s looking to show he can still do the business.

Thankfully, over in LIV Mexico this week, Watson is one of the players in with a chance of winning after round one. Watson holed seven birdies to finish five under and three back of the leader, Bryson DeChambeau.

And with two rounds to go, Watson has revealed that he’s got a bit of an advantage on the Mexico course.

Bubba Watson says why he’s at an advantage in LIV Mexico

Clearly in a good mood after his round and looking forward to what he could do at the weekend, Watson was asked about the trouble he found himself in at times in round one.

However, rather than complain, Watson revealed that the reality is that him being left-handed and able to curve the ball actually puts him ahead of others.

“I would actually say when I’m in trouble, I have the advantage because I can play shots out of trees and curve it a little bit,” Watson said in his post-round interview. “I curved one today on the new No. 12, the par-5, I was in the middle of the fairway and I had a 5-iron and I had too much club, but I hit a 5-iron and I hit a low draw under the trees to get to the hole in two, but I hit it over the greens. I was scared to hit a 6. But I could do that shot.

“But if you try to go at the flag, the trees are in the way when you’re trying to come down. That’s an advantage for me where I can hit those crazy shots. So there’s been a couple times where it is an advantage. But the hard part over the years is trusting my sight lines, so I’ve had to change it a little bit.

“Some of these guys probably don’t even think about it as much as I do. I’ve actually played halfway decent around here over the years that I’ve played here.”

Bubba Watson’s best finishes since moving to LIV Golf

It’s hardly been ideal for Bubba Watson since his move to LIV and he’s had nowhere near the success he’d have had in his head when he did move.

In fact, his form and finishes have been pretty woeful.

Watson’s best effort since going to LIV came with a tenth place finish way back at LIV Tulsa in 2023. He also managed a 12th in Adelaide that season, but that’s as good as it got.

Since then, a T15 in Las Vegas in 2024 has been the best he can muster, albeit in fairness, he has started 2025 a bit better, finishing T12 in Riyadh and inside the top 25 in Adelaide again.

However, for a two-time major champion to be struggling so much is not what Watson or LIV wants to be seeing and he’ll be hoping the advantage he talks about here can pay off in the final two rounds.
