Bryson DeChambeau leads the way alongside Martin Kaymer at LIV Golf Virginia after a stunning effort following the weather delay played into his hands.
DeChambeau finished the day at five under par to hold a share of the lead and go into the second round very much in contention to win.
The American was struggling to get consistency in his game before the weather break but then came back and immediately chipped in with his first shot, before once again chipping in a few holes later from the deep rough.
It was a remarkable stretch which begged the question of just what DeChambeau got up to in that break.
However, according to the man himself, it wasn’t actually anything ground-breaking.

What Bryson DeChambeau did during the weather delay at LIV Golf Virginia
Given Bryson DeChambeau is one of golf’s great characters in the modern era, it’s little wonder he was willing to speak to openly to the media about his miraculous end to the round.
Indeed, DeChambeau explained his thought process behind that stunning chip shot, before revealing what he did during the break.
“I don’t know. It’s one of those things, you come back from a rain delay and usually think you’re going to try and slowly get into a flow, and I came out hot and hit a great chip shot, great drive on 15, great second shot, nice putt. Then the chip shot to kind of cap it off was pretty lucky,” DeChambeau admitted.
“So just a little bit of luck. I’ve been playing good all day too. It wasn’t like I was saving par all the time. It was just couldn’t get anything going for me. But it was a great round of golf today, so proud of myself.”
Pressed further on what he actually did in the rain delay, DeChambeau admitted to getting some treatment on his feet to help him through the day.
“I got some treatment on my feet. I don’t know, just ate a little bit of food, some pasta,” DeChambeau continued.
“Man, what’s nice is coming out into some soft conditions. That little chip shot became a hell of a lot easier for me. So I just chipped it out to the right exactly what I saw. I don’t know if you saw, but I was studying it before I left. I was like this looks perfect, came out, still looks perfect, hit it exactly where I wanted it to land, and it went right in the frickin’ hole.”
Bryson DeChambeau’s big change looks to be paying off ahead of the US Open
DeChambeau’s performance in Virginia so far is no surprise and he’s been in good form for a while now across both the LIV tour and the majors.
DeChambeau’s change of irons looks to be benefitting his game already and he looks in excellent shape heading into US Open week.
With two rounds to go, it remains to be seen just how well he can maintain the level he showed at the back end of the opening 18 holes.
However, to the naked eye and with the stats backing his change of irons, it looks like DeChambeau might have found something of a sweet spot in his game.
