With just a week to go until the US Open gets underway at Oakmont, LIV Golf’s poster boy Bryson DeChambeau has gone for broke with a change that could make or break his tournament.
DeChambeau has been in the mix in both The Masters and the PGA Championship this year but in the end, he’s fallen away as his consistency failed him when it mattered.
Nevertheless, DeChambeau is never a man to stand still when it comes to his golf game and he’s known for being meticulous in his quest to improve and get the edge.
Now, heading into LIV Golf Virginia this week, DeChambeau has gone with a decision that could have massive implications for his US Open hopes.

Bryson DeChambeau goes for broke in quest for a third US Open
Given we know Bryson DeChambeau knows full well how to win a major, we should by no means be counting him out when it comes to Oakmont next week.
However, with Scottie Scheffler the undoubted best player in the world and heading into things as heavy favourite, it seems DeChambeau has taken steps to maximise his attempts to usurp the world number one.
Reported on LIV Golf’s official media page, DeChambeau has taken the decision to change his irons for the tournament in Virginia.
DeChambeau’s iron play has been his undoing at times this season. In the final round of The Masters, a number of errant shots put him in trouble, and he was down in 51st for strokes gained in approach, a theme that continued at Quail Hollow as he ranked 47th.
DeChambeau’s iron play issues have been clear all season and at Augusta, Sir Nick Faldo continually picked up on the American’s iron issues.
A seeming inability to hit things under the wind, play three-quarter shots and ultimately do what the best do – play with some feel – has halted DeChambeau at times.
Changing his irons from those 3D printed irons he has used for the last 14 months, could well be a defining moment for him.
Bryson DeChambeau’s stats in 2025
Look, there is absolutely no doubting that Bryson is one of the best players in all of golf. He is a multi-time major champ, winner of events on both the PGA and LIV tours and is one of the most popular figures in the sport.
However, for DeChambeau to win, it all needs to come together and there is no doubt his irons have let him down.
| Category | Strokes gained | Field rank |
| Off the tee | 6.664 | 1st |
| Approach | 0.250 | 47th |
| Around the green | 1.788 | 31st |
| Putting | 3.136 | 22nd |
| Total | 11.838 | T2nd |
DeChambeau might lead the way on LIV in driving distance and be top of the ‘scrambling’ stat as well on LIV, but that scrambling stat just shows he’s often battling to make a score.
In fairness to him, he has hit north of 70% in terms of greens in regulation but that is only over 54-hole tournaments, and with different pressure.
At the Masters and the PGA, he was not at those levels. Whether that is a pressure thing, only he knows but until he resolves it, he won’t be winning another major anytime soon.
