Bryson DeChambeau is attempting to close the gap on Joaquin Niemann in the overall LIV Golf standings and has been boosted after the Chilean struggled in round one in Chicago.

With LIV now on the American leg of their season to close things out for 2025, all eyes are on their star names like DeChambeau and Niemann.

So far, though, it is some old favourites like Dustin Johnson and Phil Mickelson who are providing the fireworks and entertainment in Chicago, with both players rolling the years back to be among the leaders.

Still, as is usually the case, DeChambeau is lurking on minus three as he seeks to catch Jon Rahm for the season and try and get somewhere closer to Niemann.

Niemann, meanwhile, is down in T45 at three over for round one after an unusually sluggish round.

Now, DeChambeau has commented on what he expects to see from Niemann.

Bryson DeChambeau comments on Joaquin Niemann’s performance at LIV Chicago

While Joaquin Niemann might be the best player on LIV this season, it is Bryson DeChambeau who is very much the star attraction.

He is the reason many tune in to watch LIV and he’s doing his best to finish strongly.

However, when asked if he felt he could catch Niemann, the American admitted he expects LIV’s top player to rally over the next two days.

“Yeah, Joaco has played pretty bad golf before in the first round and come back and almost won tournaments. He’s incredible out here. I think he’ll do fine the next couple days,” DeChambeau admitted.

“For me, I’m just going to focus on playing the best golf I can. I think I’m three shots back or something and going to continue to work hard to keep that ball in play and make some good putts when I need to. If I win this week, I’m one step closer to getting that title. But I want to win for the Crushers as well and see where our team stacks up.”

Bryson DeChambeau explains how his new golf ball has worked so far

Those who follow DeChambeau a lot will know full well he is into the equipment and technology side of the game and very much has an interest in product development.

This week in Chicago, DeChambeau has gone with a new ball in his bag as he tries to get the little edges needed to win.

And after round one, DeChambeau admitted he’s liking what he’s seeing so far.

“Yeah, it shot 3-under today. It was definitely interesting,” DeChambeau replied when asked if the ball is staying in the bag.

“It flew straighter, and then there was sometimes I tried to turn it over, and I just turned it over too much. But definitely some things to work out, but it’s a golf ball that flies a lot straighter with my wedges for sure, which is really nice.”

With Bryson just one back off the lead, if he can really get his new ball working then it could end up being lights out for the rest of the field.
