Bryson DeChambeau has revealed what his caddie said to him immediately after he put his second shot on the final hole at the US Open in the front right bunker.

Bryson DeChambeau approached his tee shot on 18 probably knowing that a par would be enough to win his second major title, with Rory McIlroy missing another short putt up ahead.

DeChambeau had made an error in going left, and was left with an overhanging branch impeding his backswing. All he was able to do was advance the ball towards the green, but it appeared that he had made another mistake in finding the trap at the front of the green.

It turns out that not one player managed to make par after finding the front right bunker all week at Pinehurst No. 2, so that may have left McIlroy with some hope that a play-off was likely. Some may have even wondered whether DeChambeau would do enough to even make a play-off.

Of course, DeChambeau would produce one of the shots of his life to leave the ball four and a half feet below the hole, and he made the putt to win by one.

It turns out that DeChambeau’s caddie Greg Bodine played an important role in his bunker shot, with the two-time major champion telling his press conference that he was simply reminded him of what he is capable of.

“I was concerned I might hurt myself getting out of that. I was trying to get TIO relief [before my second shot] but I didn’t have anything in my way unfortunately. I was trying to run it left of that bunker, run it up the green and give myself a two putt. I had no back swing,” he said.

“At a certain point in time I thought I just have to hack it and hopefully it will go down the line. But that didn’t happen, it cut, and it went in the bunker. One of the worst places I could have been.

“But G Bo just said Bryson, just get it up and down. That’s all you have to do. You have done this plenty of times before. I have seen some crazy shots from you from 50 yards out of a bunker. I said you’re right, I need a 55 degree. Let’s do it.”

DeChambeau’s caddie more than earned his pay at Pinehurst

The importance of the caddies certainly seemed to come through during that back nine on Sunday. DeChambeau is such an emotional player, and it would have been easy for him to lose his head when McIlroy went two shots clear with holes running out.

Of course, the caddies will be wondering how they both let McIlroy and DeChambeau use a driver on 18, but the pair had driven the ball so well all week.

Clearly, sometimes a caddie’s role is to just keep things relatively simple and give a player the belief that they can produce the perfect shot at the crucial time.
