Bryson DeChambeau is set to play in his eighth Open Championship this week.

DeChambeau has won two majors during his career to date – both US Opens, but he has struggled in general at The Open Championship.

He clearly has the ability and mental strength needed to play difficult courses well, but links golf is a completely different animal.

Former PGA Tour player Johnson Wagner has actually tipped DeChambeau to miss the cut at The Open this week.

The 31-year-old from Dallas, Texas, hits the ball extremely high, and his playing style doesn’t seem to be conducive with succeeding on links golf courses.

With that in mind, DeChambeau plans to pick up a few tips from one PGA Tour player at Royal Portrush this week.

The LIV Golf star was asked about MacIntyre’s game and if he has been impressed by what the Scot has achieved.

And DeChambeau insisted that he will be watching the 28-year-old very closely this week in order to pick up some tips on how to navigate a links golf course.

He said: Yeah, it’s impressive. What he’s done to play in the U.S. and compete and contend is very impressive. Being a lefty and he’s got his dip of the head, it’s really cool to watch him play.

That’s why I think the game of golf is so cool because from any walks of life, any place, you can come play if you work hard enough. I think he’s shown that he’s an elite player, and it will be fun to play with him on Thursday.

Asked if he plans to learn from MacIntyre, DeChambeau responded: I plan to. I definitely plan to. I want to see what he does.

It’s great to see a player of DeChambeau’s calibre being so open about his desire to learn from other pros.

Can DeChambeau really contend at The Open?

The American is obviously an elite player.

However, his Achilles heel definitely seems to be his erratic iron play, especially under pressure.

He is evidently incapable of flighting his ball down right now, and that could be a big issue for him this week at Portrush.

DeChambeau’s Open record makes for concerning reading:

2022St AndrewsT-8

If DeChambeau is to enjoy any kind of success at The Open, he needs to learn how to knock down his iron shots in windy conditions.

And who better to learn from in that regard than Bobby MacIntyre?
