Bryson DeChambeau has explained why his equipment played a part after he carded a five-over 76 on day one of The Open Championship at Royal Troon.
The 2024 US Open champion endured a disastrous front nine, making four bogeys and one double to head out in 42.
However, DeChambeau recovered well on the favourable back nine, making an eagle on the par-five 16th to somewhat rescue his round.
DeChambeau claimed his equipment would give him an advantage before the tournament; his comments were very different when summarising his first 18 on Scotland’s west coast.
Bryson DeChambeau makes ball speed admission after Open Championship first-round

Speaking after his first round, the two-time major winner suggested his ball speed wasn’t up to its usual high standards.
“I am going to go and figure it out. It’s something equipment-related,” said the big-hitting American.
“The golf balls, I mean, I am not at 190 ball speed, right. So particularly when I am hitting driver, three wood, those clubs are built around those speeds and my three wood around like 180.”
The 30-year-old claimed that the cooler conditions could be having an impact.
“And so the colder, firmer conditions, the golf balls not compressing as much, so it’s probably something along those lines,” DeChambeau added. “I felt like I was swinging somewhat okay. The ball just wasn’t coming off in the window I normally see, so it was a weird day.”
Bryson DeChambeau needs to ‘figure it out’ at The Open
DeChambeau is known as a bit of a golf geek, and it’s a title he’s probably more than happy to shoulder.
He will no doubt now be grinding hard on the range, attempting to figure out why Thursday morning’s play didn’t go as planned.
DeChambeau was the last man practicing on Tuesday evening, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him present long after the opening day’s play has concluded.
Fortunately, due to the harsh morning conditions, the US Open champion isn’t entirely out of contention. Nevertheless, he must go low on Friday to stand a chance of winning his first Open Championship come Sunday evening.
